What's Wrong With Haggis!?!? * GRAPHIC PICS & Sad update*

Recommended Posts

Come home from work and seen that poor Haggis has got half her bottom hanging out!! Not a brilliant photo but it's as if her innards are hanging outside her bum. She laid her first egg yesterday and passed a softie today. This doesn't seem to bother her but it's not right. Any ideas what to do??

Can't really see from the photo as it's a bit messy, but from your description it sounds like a prolapse.

Our Krasi had the same when she started laying.

Prompt action:

Pop the bit that's hanging out back in gently with a finger (rubber glove recommended) and apply some vaseline.

The vaseline does 2 things - protective for skin and gently soothing.

It might be a good idea to bathe the area too before the vaseline if very mucky. If you haven't any suitable poulty-type wash use salt water (it's been used for centuries as an antiseptic). Make sure the area's dried off and spray with anti-peck spray to deter the others' interest.

Watchful waiting & repeat treatment re bathing & vaseline till it clears is also recommended.

Some people say once this has happened the hen can be prone but our hen has not had a repeat. It can happen as their egg laying tackle comes into play, so to speak.

If we've left anything out others will come along to help.

Good luck.

Ok - no vaseline and no money on us to go to the corner shop so we've used pile cream.

We've dunked poor Haggis in a bucket of salty water, poked her innards back in but the vent looks too baggy to hold them in. I held my fingers over the bits for a few minutes but as soon as we popped her on floor, they fell back out again.

I'm starting to panic Mr Mainwaring and struggling to hold my vomit down!

Do we shove it in again but try to be a bit firmer and push it in further?

Yes if it wont stay in thats not a good sign

You cold try applying the pile cream again and leaving her in a box in the dark to let the prolapse shrink back a bit then try again - once things have settled down it might be easier

If you do get it back in keep her on something sloppy like weetabix and water for a couple of days to slow down her laying as the layers pellets will keep the eggs coming and she needs to recover

If you really think the prognosis is not good, that she is suffering and cannot get her to a vet to be PTS, give me a call and I will come and do the deed if you cannot, I will pm my phone no

Thanks for the advice everyone. Well, I managed to put it back in again last night, smeared her baggy vent with pile cream and then we put her in a straw lined box in the dining room with some water.

I've just come down expecting the worst.........but she's up and about and her innards appear to still be inside. She's having a preen and she looks to be fine albeit a little confused in her surroundings.

She has had a few nibbles of weetabix in water and I've put her some corn and water out too.

What do we do now?! Steve's gone to work - won't be home til about 5:30pm and he's taken my car.

Do I keep her in the box all day? Do I put her back in the run with the others? I've no idea what to do.

:?

20 minutes later.......she's tried to do a poo and her innards have fallen out again. She's back in the box, I've got a spare car in the garage so will go to work, make an appt with the vet (Jamiesons) and will come back and get her for her appt. It doesn't seem to be bothering her at all, she's very alert, eating and drinking. My boss is not going to be best pleased - he already gave me compassionate leave on the day our old girls got murdered!!

:(

Sadly our little Haggis was put to sleep this morning. The vet was great, informative, caring, firm and sympathetic all at the same time.

Thanks for your support fellow Omleteers - I don't know what I'd do without you all.

Now...how many chickens can you keep in an Eglu.....we are back to three again but quite liked having four.....but you can't introduce one on it's own.......hmmmm.......
