dippy bird
My SS is going on Sunday and he is soooo excited! Which one are you going to and have you got any friends that are going to the same one? Luckily my SS has got a few friends that are also going. Also, he has got a list of the other students that will be sharing with him and he's actually managed to find them on facebook and so now he has already made friends with them that way. Have you tried doing that? Good Luck- you'll have a blast!!
poachedegg
I bet you'll love it when you get there! ES is going on Sunday.....I am excited for him, however also a little nervous too, needless to say he doesn't seem fazed at all!! Where are you going and what are you studying? Are you living in halls?
laurmurf
the Lurker is going to Univ of Brighton in 10 days She's excited too (you'd have to ask her about the terrified bit!) I'm just feeling a bit lost....
ChrisP
I'm going to Aberystwyth, to study geography, and dont know anyone else going there personally, but have "met" someone on facebook. I'm staying in halls, right on the seafront, and it should be really good Just worried
Old Speckled Hen
My daughter, although greatly looking forward to university, was terribly worried how she'd fit in with the other freshers as they all had their own room and there could be a sense of isolation. She soon found there were people who didn't drink themselves senseless every night and she has made lifelong friends with staff and students alike. You'll have a great time. Is there a freshers week before you get down to the study? Oh and she read geography too
poachedegg
ES is going to Bangor, so not far from the coast either - you will will be in a lovely setting too, so you have an extra advantage over lots of other students. It is a lot to take in, but I'm sure the other students will be just as worried....and welcoming...and friendly. ES's tip from a student was, when he gets there to wedge his room door open and everybody will drop in to say 'hi'. Good luck, though I'm sure you won't need it. ChrisP
Oooh thanks poachedegg, I will remember to keep my door open! I'm just worried I won't fit in, i'm not a "girly-girl" but not a "tom-boy" either
craftyhunnypie
You will love Aberystwyth. Lots of nice eating places. Beach isn't too nice, but still the seaside. A Wetherspoons on the station, a Lidl & Iceland for cheap groceries, a Matalan, Peacocks - plus lots of other shops & a Somerfields Morrisons. It's just a nice studenty place! PurpleTree
My cousin is just coming to the end of her Masters in Theatre something at Aberystwyth, so she's been there about 4 years now. She's loved it there, it looks fab in the pics too being right next to the seaside. I think going to Fresher's week and joining a group that you're interested in would help. My brother went to Reading and did Human Geography, he soon met lots of people a he's a bellringer and there was a students ringing society all set up there. Hope you enjoy yourself there, I think it's natural to feel frightened.
craftyhunnypie
If you are a good cook, you will soon be popular. Just join in with everything organised for the first month - like pub crawls, meals out, communal cooking etc.
poachedegg
Oooh thanks poachedegg, I will remember to keep my door open! I'm just worried I won't fit in, i'm not a "girly-girl" but not a "tom-boy" either I read an article in The Times a few weeks ago about Freshers Week written by a former student, and it ended saying that no matter your interests, your personality etc, that there are so many different types of students at Uni, there is always somebody similar to yourself there. (.....and don't keep your door open ALL the time......personal safety and all that! )

Seagazer
Good luck - you'll be fine. We're taking our DD up to Nottingham for her final year (4th) on Monday. I remember well taking her up for her first year. We all went, all five of us. She didn't have half as much stuff then! She was nervous but also excited. In her halls she had her own bedroom with a inner hallway with bathroom and toilet and another bedroom for a fellow student. We lodged the door open and people would say hello etc as everyone was traipsing to and fro from the cars taking stuff into the rooms. I thought I would be upset to leave her up there but she was so excited to get on and know everyone by then that she happily waved us off and I stayed dry eyed. She has loved her university years but she made a point of joining quite a few clubs, hockey, debating etc. She also became a treasurer of one club, organised parties etc and helped out at open days showing prospective students around. Go and enjoy yourself and immerse yourself into student life. I really wish I'd had the opportunity to do it. Let us know how you are getting on whilst you're there. the Lurker
as my mum said, i'm off to Brighton next Friday (well, London over night, then Brighton on sat morning) so excited! but also slightly nervous just that everyone in my flat is nice (or at least relatively normal....)! i have a friend who's going to Aberystwyth too, not sure what he's doing but he's in halls so you might meet him anyway i've been using yougo (a ucas website) to meet people who are going to brighton aswell, already found some of my soon to be neighbours and 1 person who is on my course! really glad i found out about it because at least now i know some other people before i get down there! GOOD LUCK!!
