Falconry Experience

Recommended Posts

I have had the best weekend! I was in Malvern yesterday, on the Omlet stand and we sold lots of Eglus, Cubes and even a Beehaus! The show itself was fabulous, very big and I managed to even get lost at one point!:roll::wink:

On Saturday, I was in the Dales. I went on a half day falconry experience, courtesy of Henthusiastic who had a voucher, but couldn't use it before it expired so she offered it on the Free to a good home section, and I snapped it up - it was even worth the 300 mile round trip to do it!

The weather was fabulous and the centre was nestled in the hills next to Malham and Goredale Scar. The instructor was excellent, so enthused about his subject and gave us a general talk about various owls, hawks and falcons. He took out the golden eagle and told us all about him, but wouldn't let us handle him, of course!

Then we moved onto flying the birds, which was magical. We started with the barn owl who was so sweet (if a bit dim!!) Here's a photograph of him sat on my hand

Then we moved onto the wonderful bengal owl, who was hypnotising when he looked at you, it was like he was looking into your soul!

Then we moved onto flying the Saffron the harris hawk who was beautful - here are some pics of him!

Then the instructor did a demostration with a falcon, which was amazing - it was flying past us and literally clipping our hair as it passed over....I feared a mullet look by the end of the day!!

So all in all, a fabulous day and BIG thanks to Henthusiastic who gave me the chance to go along!

I'd recommend it to anybody, it is so special looking into the eyes of a bird of prey! There are various centres around the country, but I went to this one

I must admit I've always had a fancy to try that and you are right, they look so magnificent.

I was lucky, many years ago, to be involved with a rearing and release of Eagle Owls project. I think it was that that changed my mind.

These magnificent birds always look so miserable when you see them on display at country shows. It seems odd to exhibit a nocturnal species in the glare of sunlight.

I can't bear caged songbirds and I think tethering a bird is akin to making a human live in a wheelchair.

Falconry involves the use of birds of prey to kill other birds and animals for sport.

The welfare of captive birds of prey kept for sport, where they are reared and held, and at shows and game fairs where the birds are often exhibited and used in displays, is a matter of concern.
