Swearing in playground

Recommended Posts

Well I lived in rather a sheltered little world. I thought I made up a reasonably harmless one which I used a fair amount. My dad took offense and was told not to say a word unless I knew the meaning. So I looked it up in the dictionary and found it was part of a nun's headgear - pretty harmless still. My brother 8 years my junior explained the rude version - which was rather embarrassing. He also informed me of quite a few other rude ones - but nothing as bad as the ones that I have heard my children come out with - and they didn't learn them from us!

Although a lot of ones considered bad are now commonplace and used as adjectives - not my choice, but I find I shut it out and don't notice unless it is said or shouted in a menacing manner.

I do swear occasionally if as others have said I've dropped something etc. My DD doesn't seem to swear at all. She's very controlled in her speech apart from saying 'like' for every other word

I saw a mother who had about 4 kids at our school (twins in my YS's class who were later expelled  aged 9!) stand and swear at her young daughter, who looked about 5, right in her face, really loudly. This was right outside of school. I absolutely dread to think about their life inside of their house :(

Did you know, that swearing can help relive pain. Although there is a time and a place for everything.

I was just going to say that. Apparently it raises your pain threshold.. 8)

I know that when I stub my toe and swear, I feel more able to tolerate it! :)

I quite agree that it is very sad to hear young children using swear words because it just sounds wrong...but whether it offends or not it is a fact that more and more swear words are part of every day language now, and I would have thought had lost some of their sting just because they are often, rather than seldom, heard. Personally I am offended if someone holds back "because a lady is present"....I'm not likely to swoon over a word and since 1970 something haven't needed male protection thank you.

Is it very awful to admit that sometimes when our kids were small and were heard repeating words that really weren't appropriate to their age, we just told them that it wasn't a word suitable to say in front of Grandma, and otherwise played it down... .

I've no idea what you're talking about :whistle:

I very rarely swear and have been surprised at some of the words I've heard my grandchildren come out with as their parents rarely swear either - Jake plays with older boys in their cul-de-sac and we know their parents pepper every conversation with swearing so we do have to tell them (grandchildren) that certain words are not acceptable in polite company and that we don't want to hear it. We try to play it down as well.

The strangest thing is my mum coming out with a certain erm name used in Meet the Fokkers. She loves it - says it all the time just like the toddler! Naughty 80 year old.

....and, although I rarely swear......that is one of my favourite words as well :D - so applicable in many instances

I'm going to have to go and re-watch Meet the Fokkers now!:D

Can I remind anyone posting on this thread not to try to get past the swear filter by disguising the word you wish to type,or by replacing the word with ****

Any more of these & the thread may have to go,which would be a shame.

Thanks for your cooperation on this.

jusr curious but isn't that what the filter is there for? No swear words will get thru so no need to remind anyone surely? "Ooops, word censored!"ody could be offended by stars!

are pound signs and ampersands ok?

I'm not a moderator here, so this is a completely disinterested answer.

Any forum will have an attitude it wishes to promote and maintain, and it has several tools at its disposal in order to do that. No-one wishing to enforce a rule should rely on just one layer of security, otherwise once someone finds a way round it, they've no further restrictions.

With respect to swearing in particular, the word filter is, of course, just one of those tools, but is not perfect. Banning repeat offenders, not releasing posts until they've been vetted and employing lots of very active mods are other tools that could be used, but the most important first line of defence is education. It's a bit like travelling in a car; the seatbelt is supposed to help protect a passenger in the event of an accident, but no-one would rely on that alone to keep them safe, whilst ignoring the need for the driver to have earned their driving licence.

What I've seen on this site is a very chatty atmosphere, and one where there are very few (I can't think of any off hand) people who like to be controversial. Even when a potentially controversial post is submitted, the apology seems to come before the comment. Long may it continue like that.

Oh, and pound signs and ampersands are probably fine, but I reckon those tildes and hashes are a bit suspect....

Thanks for a very neat answer, Major B!

Disguising a word with asterisks or ampersands really isn't acceptable - we'd rather avoid swear-words on here altogether, not have them in a readily recognisable form. If you can decode it, then so can others. Also, if you think about it, a post full of 'oops word censored!' isn't very entertaining for anyone to read. Obvious expletives which have been disguised will be moderated.

$&~%%@! is perfectly acceptable though, it's one of my favourite expressions

Oh, and Major B - you have made my day by using the word 'disinterested' in its proper sense!

I also think that £%@* is perfectly acceptable, now $*@! is just going too far

In all honesty swearing has never bothered me (although I wouldn't swear in front of children or my Grandad). My view is it is only words.

It makes me think of a funny story, my Dad (God rest his soul) was helping me to decorate when I moved into my house, OH (who was just my boyfriend then) was also helping. I hit my hand with a hammer and the "Pain Assisting Expletives" came rushing out of my innocent mouth. I looked at my Dad, who looked at Phil and we all fell about laughing, you could tell by my Dads face that he didn't know whether to laugh or shout at me :D

My sister on the other hand has NEVER swore in her life, she uses fake swear words, Fudgecake is her personal favourite

if it's good enough for Phillip Larkin, it's good enough for me!

I saw a new one the other day which is a contraction of 2 swear words, I loved it...

the first part was trans world airlines without the a

the second part was punt without the p

sounds quite nice actually! Well, I think so.

[off on a tangent]

With the way language changes over time (and particularly English), I wonder how many people fully understand the meaning of some of the things they say. For instance:

  • Calling someone a berk is generally seen as a way of toning down an insult to almost homely and affectionate degree. However, even the Oxford English Dictionary states the term's origins as a bit of cockney rhyming slang that's far from mild
  • Everyone knows what blowing a raspberry means, but why "raspberry"? Cockney rhyming slang again - raspberry tart

Personally, I find the most offensive insults are those that make the full use of the English language and don't actually contain any swearing at all.

I totally agree! Not only the most offensive but also the most effective!

Am loving the majors [tangent] [/tangent] tags.

Everyday expressions such as blimey, crikey, heck etc all have origins that don't bear close scrutiny. Mostly blasphemous. I think in general it is best to view them in the light hearted context in which they are offered instead of being insulted by alleged historical associations about which the modern audience cannot be expected realistically to have any knowledge.

I agree with the major, that effective use of the English language is much more impressive than a barrage of swearwords.
