I do love a good bonfire but ....

Recommended Posts

Don't get me wrong I do love a good old bonfire but not today. The sun is shining and there is a lovely breeze in the air and so I hung out a line full of washing ..... we've just come home from an afternoon of walking the dog and next door but one is burning so much rubbish I cannot see up the garden  ! Now the washing stinks .... and yes I love the smell but not on my freshly washed bedding. I always have my fires after the sun has gone down

If I remember rightly, at our old place it was after 6 and at weekends (bit like the phone tariffs  ). Here I couldn't tell you, but it seems anything goes with bonfires here there and everywhere. Then just when you think it's safe, more smoke from the neighbours with their BBQ wafting clouds of grey (with a dash of hickory) over us. I do know one neighbour went marching into the house next door because the bonfire was mid morning and there was so much smoke that the whole close was covered. I had to run round closing all the windows. Fortunately it was put out PDQ. Sometimes you can't tell where it's coming from but the number of inconsiderate people out there seems on the increase.

Hi all

Thought I'd post on this as I had a 'discussion' with a neighbour about this very thing last week.

Saturday morning, bright sunshine and a nice breeze - load of towels ready to go out having been done overnight (oneof my more organised moments). Went in house and within about half hour could smell smoke - muttered a few rude words, went onto the patio and shouted "people have got washing out - thank you" and went back in.

Popped upstairs to see if the fire was still going and saw the guy loading more stuff on. Went round (5 doors up), eventually got a response via their next door neighbour and politely asked them if they wouldn't mind waiting till the evening as I had washing out and I work during the week. I got the "they've abolished the law regarding times/bonfires" (which I have checked and it is true). I then pointed out being considerate of your neighbours to which I got "there isn't much left now" so I used my best polite but Firm voice and said "well it won't take you long later then".

He had the sense to back down then.

The guidance on bonfires states that if it causes a nuisance i.e. windows open or washing out, then you should be considerate and either burn when it won't cause problems or let your neighbours know in advance.

We often have bits of rubbish to burn but would NEVER do this during the day - so we make an event of it, couple of friends, deckchairs, Jack Daniels and toasty feet. We've even done marshmallows on sticks.

And not one upset neighbour!

Steps off soap box.....

Dawn x
