Mumbles Chick
Thanks to the help of a 2008 Omlet posting (including some very useful photographs), I have successfully managed to fit bumper bits to two of my hens. I have been having terrible problems with feather pecking - and having tried everything else suggested on the world wide web(!) with no success, I have decided to give bumper bits a go. I was just wondering how long I am meant to leave the bits on for. If anyone knows, I'd be grateful for some details.
Ain't Nobody Here
I think you leave them on indefinitely? Not positive though as I've yet to use one (I have one as a last resort!)
Groovychook
The one we fitted on our girl lasted for about 4 months. I suddenly noticed one day that her bit had disappeared- it had just worn away... along with her bad attitude!!
Redwing
The one we fitted on our girl lasted for about 4 months. I suddenly noticed one day that her bit had disappeared- it had just worn away... along with her bad attitude!! Thats sounds about right, leave them on until they wear off and then observe behaviour, if the problem isnt solved another bumper bit goes on! Mumbles Chick
That's really helpful, thanks. What would I do without this site!?!
nicolaf
I am continuously having to replace bumper bits on 2 of ours who are targeting 1 hen (nearly bald) . Even when they have the bits on they are still pecking. She never seems to recover as the bits are wearing away they get to the point of being able to pull out the feathers again. Any ideas - we are following the advice on fitting and the end results looks like the photos on the site?? Thanks for any advice as we just can't understand it... Ain't Nobody Here
Have you tried Ukadex?
clucky h
I don't really know nicolaf, that sounds really tricky. Have you tried isolating the offenders? Using anti-peck spray as well? Gentian violet? These are all things that people including me have tried with varying degrees of success so maybe in combination with the bits? I hope that someone more knowledgeable will be able to advise.
Gelbel
As some of you will know, I had a girl start to bully and feather peck 2 days before we went on holiday at the beginning of the month. I had to fit a bumper bit as I could not be about for separation etc as a way to cure this bad behaviour. I do have to add I hated fitting it. We came home Thursday night and I took it out yesterday morning - from the noise from my girl it hurt her taking it out but it appears to have worked. So for us 12 days was enough.
