Nitromors - safe disposal of?

Recommended Posts

Turning out the cupboards under the kitchen sink, found a 20 year old half-full container of Nitromors (paint remover). Could I ask, please, how would you dispose of it? The only advice I can find for safe disposal is "in accordance with your Council policy". Am I going to have to pay the Council collection fee for just one can of Nitromors?

In a previous life I was a director of a large waste management company in Birmingham.

If the waste is generated from a household and not commercial waste always take it to your council recycling site there will be a storage area for paint tins etc. if in doubt ask one of the waste operatives.

My husband is the haz waste chemist for the Corp of London!! You can arrange a collection through the Corp. Just leave a message on their answer phone and they will send you a form, which you will then have to send back to the Corp. They will then contact my husband and then he will contact you to make arrangements to collect it. This is a free service. Depending on the postal strike it should all take approx 2-3 weeks to sort. The number you need to ring to get a form sent to you is 0207 3323433.

Anyone else in London with any haz waste please also contact the Corp on the above number!

Some of the tips don't have a licence to collect haz waste anymore.

I think your talking about commercial landfill sites which do not allow the public to even take in any kind waste because they would not have the correct paper work. The number of hazardous waste landfill sites was cut approx 4 to 5 years ago

Domestic waste has different criteria for instance redundent flourecent tubes from an office or factory are classed as special waste and need to be disposed of in a sealed container in compliance with all current legislation, but if its from your garage or kitchen and you take the tube to your council recycling centre they will take it with out paperwork they may ask for your address but its often not the case.

That's a very useful thing to know! I will contact them. (I guess that old aerosol tins of WD40 are haz waste, too.)

Thank you to everyone who commented.

I've no idea, but at our tip there are disposal things for different chemicals and oil.

Could be worth a look or phone call?

lol we still call ours the 'dump' even though its a recycling centre now :lol:

 Its a habit.

Ours was shut for 6 months in the middle of summer and they did it all up, now you drive in and up a ramp so you don't have to go up the stairs to drop things into the skips - much better idea!

Hi

Where do they all go anyway? We have just had the different coloured boxes delivered and one of them is for Plastic Bottles (anything shaped like a bottle & made of plastic) but NO to Other plastic items eg packaging food trays , yoghurt pots etc..

Have no problem but am just wondering where it all ends up?? Does it go abroad?? How do I find out what happens to it. They even put CCTV cameras at our rubbish dump it cost ££KK.

I went to India 20+ years ago and Delhi was clear air etc now a couple of years ago it was smog..dreadful pollution, our noses were black with soot. So polluted and industrialised very sad to see it so changed..not sure what has happened.

How do I find out whats a good website to see where it goes?

thanks indie :)

I'd have a look on your councils website.

Recycle Now looks quite good :)

I'm sure I found a page and it all gets sorted, compacted into massive cubes of the recyclable item and then sold to be used in manufacturing - so paper can makre recycled paper, plastic can make more plastic, same with aluminium.
