Well as many of you know my son has been undergoing work in preparation for his braces to correct the many problems he has. However we had a slight setback and changed his orthodontist after speaking with his dentist as the way they wanted to proceed forward just wasn't what we had agreed to (inplants and bridgework)

 

So new Ortho agrees with us and son today had his impressions (he didn't like this much) and before the ortho fixes his braces he has to wear a removable brace to correct an overbite. Then we are all steam ahead again.

 

I have to buy all sorts of brushes, wax mouthwashes, guards you name it..

 

But he's happy it's FINALLY going ahead how he had wanted in the first place. He does have to promise her he will not bite his nails though...

yes me too Jules.. my sons eyes went as big as dinner plates, he didn't like it at all but she said he was great

 

He gets the removable brace next wednesday so whats the betting that he tries to eat and drinks everything he's not allowed before then?? :lol:

Ooh, what would they be then? I was never given this 'list' when I had mind done nearly two years ago.

 

His problems sound a bit like mine were. I had a huge overbite and so had a removable brace. Then I had the lower jaw fitted with braces and then, once I'd finished with the removable brace I had the top brace on. Later I had to have the elastic bands and then I finally got to have them taken off! (10 months from start to finish in the end-very quick!).

 

After they were taken off I had to wear my retainers full-time for 3 months and now it's just at night, so I still have straight teeth.

 

Good luck! Be warned though, it feels fine when the fixed brace first goes on, but by the evening it will ache a lot and you may have a very unhappy son for about 4 days. Get in some bonjela too, VERY HANDY. Also make sure that he brushes around all his teeth really well when he has the proper brace and use mouthwash every evening.

Ollie was given the list of foods he wasn't allowed when he had his brace fitted and promptly ate everything on it within a week . It was all things he really liked like pizza and bread crusts ! Good luck to your son, CM. The braces do a great job. Both my boys have had them now and I wish I'd gone ahead when my dentist suggested one when I was a teenager! Ollie's is coming off in December, hopefully and his teeth are so much better now and it's all gone very quickly indeed . I'll echo what Ubereglu says about brushing carefully and using the mouthwash because if your orthodontist is anything like ours, you'll have your ears bashed if he doesn't .

Well the brace he's having first is a 'Twin Block' if that makes any sense.. after that he is then having train tracks (as I call them) top and bottom at the same time as each other I believe.

 

The foods are not listed as such but more like

Avoid Sugary foods, Fizzy drinks, fast foods and snacks between meals. But seeing between the lines he's worked out he's not happy..

Yes she is like that Kate, we have a letter stating we will be given warnings for bad behaviour. I will buy him the ortho kit they have which will help him, I;ve got him some wax as I remember when i had mine the wires caused rubbing and made my mouth sore. I also have to buy a retainer box.... *wipes brow*

Oh I remember you asking about this problem, glad you got it sorted for your son, was talking to someone else today about getting a second opinion. Its good to get another angle on it sometimes

 

Am sure it will all be worth it , a lot of too and fro ing(I did it for about 3 years) but he has got a nice set of nashers now, I remember he was offered pink blue or black braces when he finally had the proper brace put on.

 

The young girl that rides one of my horses has a lovely pink smile Amazing what they can do now

 

At least its a start and it will be worth it, good for him

Impressions

 

I think I had an underbite? - my bottom teeth were too far back so had to have my bottom jaw pulled forwards. I had metal springs so + couldn't open my mouth more than 2 cm then after had rubber bands.

I have train tracks at the moment. I did have a removable brace for 6 months before this one thought. It was really tight for the first few days, but then it was a lot better.

Ooooh impressions. I didnt mind them being done so much, it's just my Orthodontist couldnt get the bottom one off! It took ages of her pulling at it before it finally came off. Arrrghh!

DS got told on Monday by the dentist that if his broken tooth in the front has died (following an accident with a cricket bench whilst blindfolded & unable to hear instructions due to being deaf in one ear ) he'll have to have a false one fitted and a brace to bring everything in line

 

He really must stop sucking his thumb too

I know how he feels, i had 8 years of treatment! i had an underbite as well! my bottom teeth were 14mm back from my front teeth! they wouldnt even reach my top teeth!

 

i had the elastic bands and bits of metal, 6 monthly impressions that made me gag and a headgear set! it was horrible! but now it was worth all of it! One of my friends decided not to go through with it when she was younger and she regrets it and another of my friends has braces now in her late 20's and she hates it! oh and also has to pay for it! lol!

Thanks all yes things seem to be going forward at last. We did get a few "i dont want braces now" last night though... he said "I will have them as I need them, but I really dont want them at all" well I think the impressions made an impact

Aww, I felt a bit like that when I had mine done too and was having a bad day as my jaw was aching so much.

yes I remember my jaw aching a great deal, so much so I couldn't sleep.

 

I have been told to send an email to his school explaining the situation as his concentration might bot be 100% if he is in pain etc. An email cant hurt I guess and the first aid lady is lovely so she will keep a discreet eye on him without him being aware of it.

 

I just bought him a pic'n'mix as he will not be able to have too many sweets soon, so it was a little treat for that and also because he was so great having his impressions done.
