Dark/bright green, smelly diarrhoea *Sad Update:(*

Recommended Posts

:vom: Every day for the past week or two, found some of this in the poo trays.

I think that by the amount that it's just one of the girls that's producing it and my bet is on Betty. She's going through her first moult at the moment and hasn't laid for a while, not that she's very prolific in that department anyway! Her knickers look a bit bedraggled too. Apart from that, she's behaving perfectly normally and is showing no other signs of ill health.

They are all due to be wormed with flubenvet on November 16th, so I'm just wondering whether to bring this forward or do moulting girls normally get the squits?

I'm really hoping that she's not going to require any antibiotics as she will NOT be handled under any circumstancs!! :anxious:

P.s. The girls have pellets porridge every evening with bokashi bran and occasionally a dollop of yoghurt... I've been cutting out treats for the past couple of weeks too.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Will do- am just trying to work out the dosage for my 2.5% Flubenvet :wall:

I've always used the grape method until now but want to make sure I'm doing it properly!

Have just been out with my torch to suss out the sleeping arrangements so hopefully I'll be able to tell who's under the weather when I inspect the trays tomorrow.

A sad update to say that Betty died during the night :(

After I'd wormed the girls, she'd seemed much better and her poo's had been back to normal, so I presumed that we'd solved the problem.

She still hadn't been laying but I thought that could have been down to her going through a mini moult.

Yesterday, she looked a bit hunched but was eating as normal and went to bed happily with the other girls but OH has just been out to check on them and found her still in the position where she fell asleep last night.

It's very sad. That's 2 girls we've lost over the past couple of months and we've only had them since last October. Feeling very down about it all :(

Thanks everybody for your kind words...

I wasn't expecting chicken keeping to be so upsetting :(

It just seems so quick to have lost 2 of our 6 girls. I hope we've just been unlucky and it's nothing we're doing wrong.

We'll hopefully get a few more girls in the summer... something to look forward to.

Really sorry to hear about Betty Groovychook. I'm sure it's nothing you are doing. I know how upsetting it is to lose a beloved hen. They are such beautiful gentle and characterful creatures. You still have your other lovely girls and as you say, when the days become longer maybe you can have a couple of new additions
