Tutti Frutti
As a newbie, can I just ask, did anyone choose their girls' names in advance, before meeting them? Or did you wait to name them after you'd met and/or got to know them? We had some names in our mind but, of course, Roxy didn't suit hers so it took us ages to come up with hers - she's a bit of a rock chick
docsquid
I had a few names up my sleeve. I wanted them to have Welsh names. When they arrived, I picked ones that a) Suited the chicken concerned and b) My non-Welsh husband can pronounce I still have a long list of names, so DH might have to put up with more chickens
Guest
beforehand; from beatles' songs (prudence, martha, sally, lizzie, lucy and eleanor) and from tennyson poems (fatima, shalott, maud and mariana) Bea already had a name when she came to us. Space Chick
Mine were mostly named before I had them, as they are all named after Dr Who Assistants.
Chucky Mama
We chose beforehand but have 3 children which makes naming things more 'interesting' We did have to veto a few names, mainly involving the word bum or similar
Falkor
I had themes in mind but waited for the ladies to arrive and settle in for a few days before they got named. (despite being told off by certain forum members who will remain nameless but SpaceChick and Cookie Monster you know who I am talking about!) Gelbel
I had Rita's and Joy's names for ages before I got them (and I mean about 18 months - that's how long I waited to take the plunge once I decided I was really going to get some). The DH named Grace when I told him I brought the hen house and were getting three - so that was a week before we got them. If he hadn't named her, she was going to be another variation of the word beginning (H)en. The next two (for when one or more have gone to henny heaven) will be Cissie and Ada. And if I ever have to get three again; they will be called after my three oldest and best friends - and I wish I thought of that before.......if my brother can call his three after our mum and her two sisters. Cooks
cant think what your referring to Em! Yes Getting my original Two my boys chose names before going to get them YS chose 'Cocoa' and OS chose 'Pearl' however he changed it to 'Sugar' when we got home. Sugar is no longer with us sadly. The second lot were named by my OS prior to collecting when he had fractured his cheekbone and pulled the sympathy card so he got to name them. 'Dory' and 'Flo' from.. of all things... Finding Nemo and he's a teenager.. Third set of girls well one had a name 'Bumble' prior to being collected again this was OS naming her... and I named 'Pepsi' on the way home with Em after collecting her. BeckyBoo
Some we named before some when we got them, they've all been named for a reason, the ex-barn girls were going to be barn dancer type names, so I wanted Daisy Duke, Dolly (as in Parton) etc, but the children had other ideas, hence one is now called George but then his first chicken was called Duck as he was only two and all birds were ducks to him! Chook n Boo Mum
Mine are all flowers or trees.....except Peanut who DD named & Hazel was added to balance/link the nuts back to trees .....and yes I do know that a peanut grows underground before anyone picks that up Drusilla, Cordelia, Buffie and Willow...though she fits in nicely.......were named by their previous mummy Sha x
Valkyrie
Mine were Native American tribes and chosen in advance. The chicks were named by DD, although the maran was called Emo for a while. I'm going back to tribal next time.
jan246
We chose our names beforehand, I wanted a Shakespeare theme but it went a bit astray, lol. Still, they are still names of a similar ilk I guess. Jan
poachedegg
We chose all our names before they arrived - traditional 'old girl' names for our normal girls and pretty flower names for the ex batts. Its amazing how I can be reading something or watching TV and hear a name and think @that would be a good chicken name'!

Mrs Frugal
All mine have been named beforehand apart from Coffee the chicken of fate who turned up unannounced . Our original Omlet pair were Jennifer and Clarissa - the two fat ladies and we chose Isabella after Isabella Beeton to follow the culinary theme. The Sussex Girls are all named after Greek Goddesses chosen by my YS and the Posh Birds have flower names after my great Grandma Rose, her SIL Lily and we chose Daisy to go with those as we didn't have any other flower names in the family . Egluntyne
I've always had a shortlist drawn up, and I like each new batch of hens to have it's own name theme.
Woodcat
hey We waited till we met most of ours(except Renee and Prof who already had names) We spend weeks talking about names before hand but they never end up as them. The only one who was named before she came was Lolly. Whos full name is actually Lolita though she isn't named after the lolita book. Just before we got them i was bought a Dvd of the muppet show and on that Gonzo the great had a dancing chicken called Lolita. I then decided that i wanted a hen like Gonzos not thinking about the book so by the time i had remember about that two weeks after we got them she was so firmly lolita that i couldn't change it though it does get shortened most of the time Beth
sarahphe
we had no idea what to call ours but a myrtle seemed to be mentioned by a few people. we ended up naming them once we got them and now have myrtle charlie and frankie (who i kept calling rxoy for some strnage reason!) my mum says theyre boys names apart from myrtle but when you see the girls they really suit their names! charlie is the boss, myrtle is the escape artist who is completely different from the others and frankie is a complete sheep and does whatever the others do! Tigerfrogg
My boys named everything before it arrived, the are all autobots and the are all decepticons there run is cybertron and there pellets are refered to as the all spark, currently Megatron is top chook after some posturing with Optimus (Both are the oldest chickens according to the fact there faces are starting to go a bit red) so the battle to save earth in my backgarden is not going so well. Kirstine
Ours have to be named after they arrive, so they get names that suit them. DH does most of the naming (how else do you think we once had a cockerel called Periwinkle Pea-Bum?), but occasionally I insist that it's my turn. Once we had to let my step-daughter name one; she ALWAYS names everything Sparkie, so we had a poor hen who was called Mrs Slocombe most of the time, and Sparkie when DSD was visiting! I don't think she had an identity crisis - as long as corn and banana was available she was happy Kirstine
