David Beckham - Don't be put off by the title.

How can someone as excruciatingly thick and dull be clever enough to make all this money?.

Actually, I would just like to point this out, and sorry in advance for going against the general flow of this thread: I actually quite admire things about the Beckhams:

1: They stick together as a family unit: Most other people would have crumbled under the hype and pressure.

2. They do need the money: Their lifestyle now is dependant upon earning these kinds of amounts..

incidentally, as an employee of Real Madrid, he would have had to give 1/2 of his rights on any named products to them... his new deal in the US will ensure he gets 100% of any deals he signs his name to....

Most importantly, it is a well known fact that there are multiple intelligences: approx 7.

1. Linguistic: Well, he has apparently learnt Spanish, so despite sounding thick, he can't be.

2. Spatial: Well, I challenge anybody on this forum to have better spatial awareness than him in terms of knowing how to place a football for team mates.

3. Physical. Don't need to say anything here do I?

4. Musical.... erm, well, possibly not

5 Mathematical/logical: angles? trajectories? team strategies and game plans? Adapting to new situations??? well, certainly good in a practical sense.

6. Emotional intelligence (intrapersonal): he is clearly in touch with his emotions....

7 interpersonal: He is liked/loved by friends, colleagues, family, the media, millions in fact...

so thick? 6/7? I think not!

Have to differ with you AnnieP...sorry

Your first point about them sticking together, well, I suppose they have...but don't forget Rebecca Loos!

According to my Spanish friend his Spanish is execrable...and as he has lived there for a few years now you would expect it to be at least competent.

As for his emotional intelligence...remember his fit of pique at the World Cup before last where he deliberately fouled an opponent and was sent off, thus jeopardising England's prospects....and he was the captain!

You say that he is liked and loved by millions, well maybe, but it would appear that he and his wife are loathed and derided by similar numbers.

Not thick...his interview on American TV said it all.

I think he is for some unfathomable reason "Marketable" and is cynically manipulated by others who stand to make huge amounts of dosh out of him and fair play to him for making hay while the sun shines. He will be dropped like a hot potato soon enough. (horrible mixing of metaphors, I know)

I think the worst I can accuse them of is appearing shallow...

I think they are only loathed by millions either because people are jealous of his talents or money or because the Beckham "brand" has been over exploited by their promoters and people are sick of seeing and hearing about it.

I am sure not having a TV and not taking a newspaper means that I am not aware of how often they are in the media, but this is surely only partly their fault?

The biggest factors which stick in my mind about him is his remorse after the said world cup debacle, which I believe was genuine, and a programme I DID see where they were hosting a party for children with special needs at their home in Essex (snigger snigger).

There were children there with excruciating and appalling physical and mental disabilities, and the pair of them were just WONDERFUL with them. One image I have is of a girl wanting him to kiss her, and he did, a real affectionate smacker, right on her dribbly cheek, accompanied by a huge hug. Posh then joked with her about her stealing her husband. It was truly wonderful and that little girl looked like she was in heaven.

I don't care about what the rest of the world thinks, call me an optimist, but I don't think either of them are bad people.

Their millions and their lifestyles don't bother me in the slightest.

You make some good points AnnieP...but I am still not won over!

Maybe I'm old and cynical...but they never do anything without making sure there is a damned good photo opportunity. The children would have been just as thrilled to meet them privately, I'm sure.

The Sheffield United Players regularly call in at Sheffield Children's Hospital, with very little fanfare, and spend time with the patients, and they also voluntarily visit a local Charity called St Wilfrid's Drop In Centre and get absolutely nothing in return, both these things rarely get mentioned in the press...but they do it anyway. Far more admirable in my book.

All the best!

:D

I bet they wouldn't turn the press away if they did show an interest though!

I think we can all just conclude that America is welcome to the Beckhams and I will certainly watch with interest to see if they can make it out there. Many have tried and failed in the past...

On a charity note, (much nicer to talk about people who do good work), I had no idea that Elton John is the second highest paying philanthropist in the UK. He is somebody else who doesn't come across well to me, but there you go! Other (famous people) high up on the list are: Bob Geldof, Bono, Anita Roddick, Jamie Oliver and Richard Branson.

Good on them!

By the way, Thierry Henry is the highest giving footballer. 8)

His Gallic shrug......oohh, off for a cold shower...:lol:

I LOVE voices.... Thierry's, Alan Rickman's, Richard Burton's, Last year the "Sexiest voice in Britain", as voted for by RNIB members (and they should know) was Sean Connery.... Thierry was second!

Connery does nothing for me though. :?

Aaaaah Thierry.... He most definatly has the va va voom...

We have a french guy at church who preachs sometimes - i always listen to what he has to say... :D that accent...

Regarding Beckham, he comes across as a bit dim in interviews, can't string a sentance together very well.... I'm sure he's intelligent in other ways... :?

I don't like him, not beacuse he is shallow (which i think he may be) or because i'm jealous of his success but because he played for Man. U - maybe not a very good reason but the truth!

I've been missing for a couple of days and am only just catching up on this thread and you know, s*d the Beckham's, for me the overrriding thing here is how special this forum is. We obviously all have different opinions, of course we don't all agree, but I just love the way that people here can express their opinions, and Ok, others come on and say something different, but it's not nasty, there's no underlying unpleasant undercurrents. It's simply a healthy debate.

How often do you get that elsewhere :? .

I love this forum, and all the folk who post on it, simply because we're not all sycophantic enough to agree all the time, we're all different and all interesting and all have different opinions, but we're friendly and there's no nastiness at all in our disagreements.

Thanks all for a really interesting debate :D

(KateA has just imbibed rather more red wine than is healthy :oops::oops: )

On the Beckham's though.

Sorry, I simply can't abide her. Largely I think because she's too thin, and as she's getting older she's looking positively gaunt. My opinion only, but I truly believe that we need a little bit of fat to pad out those bones. OK , I've taken that philosophy a little too far, but I don't think she's a good role model to teens, and I'm speaking as the Mum of a rather too weight sensitve 13 year old.

Becks, well I know very little about football really, but it's the footall fans who govern the wages. He's in demand and revered by youngsters all over the world for his footballing skills. I'm not convinced that his intellect is that impressive, but what does that matter :? ..... he's paid for what he can do with a football, not for his IQ. There's a big bit of me that finds it obscene that he, or any other pro footballer can earn so much in comparison with, for example, a surgeon who is literally saving lives every day, but then we're down to market forces, supply and demand and so on. There's only one David Beckham.... there's loads of surgeons

I agree with you Kate about the forum.

I have never met a nicer, friendlier, more welcoming bunch of people...also I seem to have found lots of us have loads in common.

and yes we can have a good debate without being rude or hurtful to others and peoples opinions are respected and listened too.

I think WE ARE ALL GREAT PEOPLE !
