Gerbils

Recommended Posts

Bit excited here  We now have 3 gerbils!

They came from a local breeder and are brothers, born on the 17th October, so are 7 weeks old.

Their gerbilarium:

The coolest carry cage ever

I've also bought them a gerbil (yellow eglu) (well I think it looks like one ), but they aren't using it yet, probably at Christmas :D

Fantastic gerbilarium Lewis! I had and bred gerbils for many years they're great, friendly pets. Just double check they're definitely boys. One of my boys developed into a girl!

When they're young it can sometimes be hard to tell.

I hope they bring you lots of pleasure and they enjoy digging tunnels in all that sawdust.....brilliant! :D

They are really lovely Lewis. What a fancy little bedroom they have - not seen anything like that in my travels.

Murray's sister used to have a gerbil when they were quite young (probably around 8 years old or so) and he thought it would benefit from being outside in the sunshine seeing as they come from the desert, so put the cage in the middle of the garden. It was a hot day . . . .

and when his sister saw it, the poor little animal was spread eagled in it's water bowl trying to cool off. He said it was a vicious monster! Well you would be too if some human had tried to cook you! Luckily it was fine. I also gather the animals are a bit nocturnal - and therefore miss the desert heat during the day.

oh I LURVE gerbils! they are gorgeous, Lewis! I like the gerbilarium too!

We had lots of them in the past in a big old aquarium packed with compost/soil that was quite dense; they dug tunnels throughout that we could look into through the glass. We just had to spray it every so often to keep moist enough to compact.

Enjoy every Tom, Dick and Harry moment!

We have one remaining gerbil - Duke - and the same set up as you. It's OK but messy - the novelty of watching sawdust fly out and all over the place wears off very quickly!!

Duke is lovely though. She used to live with Tim (also a girl) but decided to beat Tim up so they lived separately side by side until Tim died just under a year ago. She loves peas and walnuts.

Lovely gerbils :D

Good job you've chosen boys - we bought 2 girls and within two weeks we had 20 gerbils

......both were pregnant as they hadn't been separated early enough! One had 10 babies and then the second had 8. The petstore owner refused to take any back as well

I love gerbils 8) Always had them as a kid. Ours used to hang on the bars and chew on them with there tail hanging through the bars, that was until the cat bit it off  Gerbil was fine and lived a long and happy life. So we put perspex (sp?) over the front of the cage to keep them safe.

OH and I had gerbils, Noel and Liam, when we got our first house. They were fab, such fun although they were very speedy. We used to put them in the bath, without water, to have a run around. We had the rotastack system but they used to chew through the plastic all the time. Gerbilariums are great, DD has a hamster in one and he loves digging. Mind you, the sawdust goes everywhere, even if it's not too full.

Can't wait to see the gerbil (yellow eglu)

was going to say try using peat in the tank

I had numerous gerbils in my youth. The babies dont half move fast I moved onto campbells later on as I couldnt keep up with the gerbil;s anymore
