I am surprised at this, but it really works....

 

Been talking to a scientist friend, who works in developing livestock vaccines and the like.... they have found - completely by accident - that red mites are killed by Lemon Flash!!

 

For part of what they do, they have to collect red mites from a battery farm (just the idea makes my skin crawl), one of the lab technicians was cleaning up in the lab and noticed that some escaped red mites were crawling away from the Flash, and were dying They have tried it out, and yes, they do die. I have asked about the toxicity of Flash where hens are concerned and she says it isn't a problem (doesn't contain phenols), in fact probably less toxic (in her opinion) than a lot of red mite zappers. She does advise rinsing it carefully though after leaving it on the housing for a while to kill the bugs.

 

We'll have some sweet smelling chooks then!

Migth be worth a try, and do let us know if any of you have red mites that are killed by it.

Hope we never have to try it out but sounds good. Its supposed to work on ants aswell, my aunt used it in their fridge last year (I think it was flash).

Diatom works well on ants - I always get them trying to come in under the front door; the last couple of years I have put a line of Diatom in their path and they've bothered off elsewhere now.

I have loads too, and love the stuff.

 

A friend with a wooden shed still gets red mite, so I might give her some lemon Flash and ask her to try it out.

She didn't specify, but I imagine that they were wiping surfaces down with it, so probably.

Cool, I use lemon Flash at home anyhow, so I will decant some into a plant spray to get into all those nooks & crannies on the Cube

Great tip! I have no idea how much lemon flash costs but reckon it must be cheaper than poultry shield. I have a wooden house and am poultry shielding it weekly to keep it clean and kill any red mite who might have strayed in. When the PS is used up I will definitely give the flash a whirl.

Try the Total Mite Kill that Tasha and I are using - it's really good.

Cool, but don't try Mr Muscle lemon kitchen cleaner. I sprayed it under my cockateil cage and the fumes killed two of my cockatiels. This was years ago, but still sad.

Ducks stink! ... so I thought I'd use a little bit in the hutch to stop the smell, and because they're new, just incase they do have any mites. It worked on the smell
