Happy Christmas to everyone and their ducks :-)

we have a problem down here,in Bristol :-( another limping duck.my poor girl, big duck,8month old khaki campbell,is limping and has been for one week +.not good I know. I'm wondering about putting a splint on her.she is on complete cage rest and has been since Christmas day,she is on metacam too.she is eating and drinking and pooing normally but hasn't laid for a week now.while I won't hesitate about the vets because of the money, they make me nervous about lack of experience with birds.I had a sad old time with one of my Chooks when I believe a rash decision to end her life was made, and in my inexperience,I went along with it.I don't want to make the same mistake but I don't want to deny big duck the rightful treatment, hence my enquiring about a splint.any tips or advice or instruction will be verygratefully received,

thank you so much

Rachel

Did not want to read and run l had a chicken put to sleep a coulpe of years ago :( then when another hen had the same problem l took her to another vet because l was not happy with what happened to ruby so l understand why you have this concern.I have 7 ducks and do worry in case this happens to one of them.I hope some one comes along soon to help you :)

If you think it sounds like you need it, then maybe try to :)

If it were me, I'd get some micropore and dressing from the pharmacy, use a wooden lollystick against the leg, some dressing and then you can get expensive stuff for splints like a plastic mesh, that you wet and apply and it dries in the shape of the split but fast. Have a google and see if you can find anything similar :)

Our hen Acorn has been wearing a splint for several months. Her problem is ligament damage and the vet has made us the splint (no charge! :D ) we have been to visit the vet several times and she has come back with all sorts of concotions on her leg that he has made up  it is quite difficult because the leg is so small. He actually used pipe lagging and a lollipop stick, and the ligament is healing slowly.

However, you do have to be careful that the splint is not too tight :!: especially around the joint area.

If you have a friendly vet perhaps a phone call for some advice may help? Also your duck's injury maybe different to my hens.
