worming

Recommended Posts

could you give me your advice. I have had my hens since October. I wormed them with flubenvet when I got them to be sure. They are happy hens and are good layers even in this cold weather. My question is if they need to be wormed 3 monthly it is due now. As I understand no other food is to be offered with the flubenvet treatment, seeings as the weather is cold and I have been supplementing their diet with porridge and other general snacks will it be detrimental to worm them now when I won't be able to offer them any extras, should I wait a little for it to warm up. What do you think?

I too was going to worm my girls as it has been 3 months, but as most people say to do it every 3 - 4 months, I have decided to wait a while and hope the weather gets even just a few degrees warmer as I think the warm porridge and little extras they are getting at the moment to keep them warm are better for the moment. I wont leave it any longer than 4 months though. :D

I am sure "our" resident worm experts will come alog soon, but I THINK that due to the cycle of breeding they need an intermediary host. (worms/slugs/snails) as very few are available in this weather, that will help.

many people NEVER worm, I thought 6 monthly was the recommendation Unless like me you know or seem to have a high worm count in your soil.

If your girls are healthy at the moment I would def wait till the weather warms up, as you are giving extras to help them stay /keep warm.

There are loads of threads on this supjject and lots of us use the grape method.

Just my opinion :D

Just what I was going to suggest Plum

I mix up extra flubenvetted pellets to make their daily pellet porridge up. That way they don't miss out - would never hear the end of it, if they didn't get their porridge and sweetcorn :lol:

I worm mine every 4 months now, as they are free ranging on the same piece of land. I don't wait for evidence of worms.
