Poorly chicken, swollen vent.

Recommended Posts

Lily looked like she was going to lay a softie on Friday which she did on saturday so I put her hunched up appearence down to that. She seemed a bit better yesterday and this morning but I have just checked her now and her vent is swollen and dripping fluid. the others have been pecking her so I have sprayed the sore patch with purple spray and seperated her. I now she probably needs to see a vet but is there anything I can do in the meantime till #I can get her to a vet on Monday. She is still quite bright and alert in herself.

If she is dripping and swollen at the vent she probably has an egg coming. I would keep her warm and seperate as you have done.

You can help her lay by sitting her in warm water or on a wrapped warm hot water bottle. It sounds as if an egg may be stuck and you can put some lubricant in and around her vent. If you feel a hard egg shell then I think the idea is to get some oil up around the egg if you can and turn it. But be careful not to break the egg. If you break the egg make sure you get all the bits of shell out.

I think it's best to help her get the egg out than have her prolapse. Good luck, I hope she is ok. Best have a good look first. :)

By the way if you put her in warm water then dry with hair dryer afterwards, they love it and it will help relax her. :D

Thanks for your advice plum.

her vent seems to be ok now, I think the puple spray helped, I think like you that it was due to being pecked. i put her back with the others to FR before bedtime and watched them from the house for a bit. She tucked into some tuna and had a bit of a scratch round. She was going hunched up for a bit then would seem to go back to normal and start wandering round with the others, then go hunced up again. I presuming see is just feeling a bit off colour hopefully due to moulting.

She seems almost back to her usual self. It was actually nice to see her taking a peck at one of the others today [she's second in command and takes no prisoners]. I thought I was going to lose her yesterday as she was so down and even the chickens at the bottom of the pecking order were having a go at her, although she was giving them the evil eye.

I think she's been so down due to moulting as her bald bottom is now redder and looking like she's getting new feathers. She's had loads of treats which seemed to help perk her up. Fingers crossed she will be ok now.
