Henhathnofury
I admired them and my other half was keen but I think I remember it saying that they were not good with children. I had visions of them eating my daughter!
Redwing
They are very nice but not that easy to track down Also consider the size of house/run you will need for them, they wont be happy in an Eglu for example
Pikey
Hi....there are some on sale on the breeds page of Omlet website.....based in Cornwall??
Daphne
They are a pretty relaxed breed (I don't keep them but know someone who does) but they do get very big (very roughly JG girls are the size of an orp boy) and take ages to mature and quite a bit of feeding - housing would be the biggest concern for me. If you have children they may struggle to do much handling comfortably.
joegg
Wernlas collection breed Jersey giants there is almost certainly a waiting list - give them a call they are lovely people some say expensive but the birds we had from them have been of fantastic quality. They have a website.

Do you know if a Cube is suitable for them?
Lewis
Not seen any myself I don't think, but found a photo just to see how massive they are Personally from that I'd say no to keeping them in a cube, but that could be a very big example so would like to see one first I'd think a buff orp would be ok though, so not sure now! I agree with Lewis, I think you would struggle keeping them in a cube, I have seen Janty's brahma girls and they are ok in a cube but Jerseys are bigger again
Henhathnofury
I showed my husband all about the Jersey Giants and he said 'Let's get some!' He was talking about building a house, reorganising the garden. He was so excited. But last year he wanted a turkey and I said 'no'.......I was the chicken mad one once! But he is passing me by! chelsea
Yikes that is a big chicken! I thought my cochins were big, I wouldn't put a Jersey Giant in a cube to be honest - I would imagine the nest box would be too small.
HENthusiastic
I fell in love with Jersey Giants a while ago and was looking into keeping some. I was put off though by reading that you can't just give them food on demand as they will over eat and get too fat / unhealthy. As I was thinking of keeping them within a flock of other birds I'd have no way to monitor their eating so I decided not to go with them. I cant remember where I read / heard this, so I may be wrong. Keep us posted, I'd be really interested to hear more about your research
Henhathnofury
That sounds like a way to put my husband off Jersey Giants...although he has the same problem with overeating. I love your alpacas. Have you ever seen them in action against a fox? I have heard that they are wonderful deterrents...far more beautiful than a Foxwatch! HENthusiastic
Ive been reading about JJ's and havent seen anything about feeding them differently, so Id forget I mentioned that. Sorry to have misled you. I'm re-enthused about them now! The alpacas are beautiful creatures. Unfortunately when we first had them, we lost a few chickens to foxes I have read a lot about them chasing foxes away, but sadly my lads do not seem to have that ability . I now have my chickens safely guarded by 50m of electric fencing instead
Chickvic
That is one big chicken!
HENthusiastic
Ive just read that they do eat a lot. But then Ive also read that they lay an extra large egg, so I guess thats fair.
Valkyrie
I've seen pics, but seeing that one puts it into perspective! They are indeed giants! I suppose they eat more because of their size - but Orpies can be greedy too.
Daphne
The woman I know who keeps them used to breed them for sale but she found people weren't interested because of the very long time/amount they eat to get to full size - plus hers were black and some people aren't keen on a massive plain black bird. I think the difference between JGs and orps is that the JGs eat to maintain their 'all flesh' figures whereas the orps eat to maintain all that fluff and feather. I should think if you picked one of each up the JG would weigh quite a bit more!

chick wiggle
The JGs look gorgeous, I would love some too, but, probably highly impractical. The bantams would probably kill them - pecking at their ankles Henthusiastic, you have loads of room for them and then we could all come and see them and your lovely boys again By the way, have your boys not read the book about chasing foxes off? Oh, and by the way again, on a totally different subject (sorry to be a thread napper) my OH loved your brothers book, thought it totally hilarious! thanks

Valkyrie
I think you'll just have to borrow a llama to show them how it's done HEN. Thinking about it, perhaps the JG's will be big enough to sort the foxes out anyway!

CHickwiggle: I think my lads are far too sensitive and gentle to get into any kind of argi bargi with foxes, or anybody else for that matter. They would seem far more likely to attend a peace conference than get into anything aggressive I'm still dreaming about hatching some Jersey Giants in Spring.
