Tiggy
thankfully he was visiting someone last night & not in the car when a BMW driver lost control, braked, the back end then swung round straight into OH car. Not impressed !!! but no one was hurt. I'm sure there will be a few more incidents like this before this weather clears up Edited January 6, 2010 by Guest

Valkyrie
Mum's cousin has a recovery and repair company - he is verrrrrry busy at the moment. There'll probably be a lot more when this lot freezes.
docsquid
I really think that skid control should be part of the driving test. It is in many countries. I've seen people doing the most daft things in their cars in this weather. One of the best things I ever did was a rally-driving course which taught me how to skid under control. One of the things on the list for this year is to do another skid-control course for front-wheel drive and 4 wheel drive as the techniques are different for rear-wheel, front-wheel and four-wheel. Really glad that "Ooops, word censored!"ody was in the car, but what a nuisance to have the car wrecked at this time of year!

That's just what I was thinking at the start of this thread. You took the words out of my mouth This is the fourth bout of impossible weather since I moved here 2 years ago. DH has a 4X4 but he goes to work in it and my little car can't cope. We are up a steep drive and the hamlet is in a dip with steep lanes out each side to the A6. I am marooned I have to upgrade to 4X4 and learn how to drive one properly
Happy chickens!
Glad no one hurt, but what a pain. I have 4 wheel drive (and have learnt how to drive it) but didn't go out yest as there were so many crashes locally, a) the town was gridlocked and b) even if I wasn't slipping there was a fairly high chance of someone slipping into me! Seagazer
I also think it should be taught with the driving test. My OH has been telling us all what to do in the event of a skid but I think unless I actually had a go in a controlled manner it probably wouldn't sink into my head! I'm glad your hubby wasn't in the car at the time Tiggy.

Redwing
Yes thank goodness everyone was ok BMWs are terrible on the snow and ice - people who could control a FW drive car on an icy road dont always understand that the RW drive car acts differently, mine is awful whereas my previous car a FW drive Volvo was wonderful Needless to say my Beamer is staying on the driveway today! debbier
My rw drive is diabolical in this weather. Thank goodness I don't have to go out: I'm baking bread and tidying up. The kids are off school and the internet is going off soon so they do some tidying too!!
The Dogmother
Glad that he's OK Tiggy - lucky escape. Just goes to show that even when you're careful in this weather, not everyone drives as safely. Skid control is an important skill, but it all goes to pot in weather like this when the car just takes it's own course and you have no control whatsoever. RWD cars are pants in this weather, I just had to get one of the director's car (Merc) out of our front car park... RWD and he was in too low a gear so the wheels were spinning. He wasn't too happy to have a woman do it for him! Had to do the same in February last year!

Snowy
Glad he is OK! There were some total idiots out on the roads when I went to work this morning. 6am, -2 degrees and people were overtaking me. They weren't even on the main roads - this was on the little windy bendy lanes that hadn't been gritted.

ali-s
Glad your OH is Ok and wasn't in the car when the accident happened. Jack has a few early morning driving lessons in this freezing weather his instructor has been taking him to an empty car park in town to do some skid training. The instructor has been pulling on the handbrake while Jack has been driving slowly around the car park and Jack has to get out of the skid. Jack has found this very helpful especially this morning on his lesson and the car actually went into a skid, Jack corrected the car and carried on driving
