You haven't lived unless you have bottomwashed a chicken...

My little gingernut Desdemona has had a bit of a runny bottom. I kept dithering whether to wash it or not but today it looked awful. i think it has been freezing on her backside and then defrosting...it can't be a nice feeling. So I brought her in and put her back end in some warm water, cleaned up the mess and then used an old towel and hairdryer to dry her off. She was in absolute heaven, burying her face in my lap and put her derriere in the air so that I could do the job probably. Then she had lot of cuddles and she is now walking around looking as if she is more comfortable.

I enjoyed it so much though...we both did..lovely to have that contact with them but also to feel the complete trust she has in me. Dessie is nearly three now so officially, for a hybrid, in her dotage. She's a star though...

:D

Megan had a slightly mucky bottom. A trick used when skiing to clean the goggles or any much off your ski clothing is to roll a small snowball and use this to clean it. Anyway, I tried it on Megan and she loved it! She was cooing away while I cleaned her off and her bottom was clean and dry instantly.

The snow is actually pretty dry - it doesn't leave the feathers wet at all. It just simply cleaned off the muck and she was lovely and clean. I figured she'd let me know pretty quickly if it was too cold for her.

Shame we don't have snow available all year for chicken cleaning!

Try it when they are moulting - and then using the hair dryer. The utility room has never been the same since!

Yup I did that

Thanks folks - please put a warning before posting seriously funny tales. :shameonu:

I've snorted tea everywhere and spluttered a pain aux raisin all over the desk and had a 10 minute choughing fit.:boohoo:

I have only known one hen - Brian - who didn't enjoy being blow dried. The others have all thought it was wonderful :D

I consider myself a veteran bottom washer these days having done Ping once a week for several weeks last summer when she was going through a bad bout of sterile peritonitis. Sometimes it was warm enough to do it outside which cut down considerably on hosing down the kitchen afterwards!

Glad Dessie is feeling better.
