Prolapse!

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, not been around for ages

Just spent an hour or so with my young Cucoo Marans, Christi, trying to invert quite a bad prolapse. She started laying a couple of weeks ago but found her hiding in a dark corner tonight bleeding and badly prolapsed. Brought her in and cleaned her up and gently pushed it back again. I think it's been out for a while as very bruised and congested looking. When I hold her semi upside-down or across my lap with legs outstretched it stays in but when I stand her up she grunts loudly and heaves it back out again!

I've put it back in 4 times, but have left her in the pet carrier for now to settle. If it's not back in by itself tomorrow I'll have another go and if it doesn't work will need to take her to get put to sleep :( . I've had a couple of prolapsed chooks before, one sorted itself out and the other didn't.....usually happens when they come back into lay after the winter or young chooks just starting.

Fingers crossed :(

Poor you :( . My girl was like that, the vet advised me to use anusol which I did but what worked quickest was Redwings advice to sprinkle sugar on it. That brought the congestion down really quickly but she wouldn't tolerate it still due to a lot of dead tissue. Took about 2 weeks to get that off. Now everything has been back for a bit but she's not laid again yet.

Also stop her ovulating by keeping in the dark and taking off mash/pellets so I gave my girl stuff like wheat, weetabix, oats, suet free bird food etc., and plain grit (after I remembered she needed that  ).

Good luck I'll see if I can find my thread, I was given lots of good advice.

Thanks for the replies. I had forgotten about the sugar thing, will try it in the morning. She's standing up in the pet carrier, pushing now and again. She had sat down earlier and I'd hoped that was her for the night, and if she slept and relaxed it might go back in a bit. I hate the idea of her being on her feet all night :(

Plum, what a job you had with your chook, I'm glad she recovered.

Much of the prolapse is black and necrotic looking this morning.Cleaned off a bit of poo and poured on some sugar but didnt try and put it back in as I know she'll push it back out. No chance of getting to my usual vet today as it's in a tiny village up a very steep hill in the middle of nowhere!. Will see what happens with the sugar and re-assess in a couple of hours. I'm not feeding her either as I don't want her to poo, she has water though.

There was no sign of the prolapse going back in and every now and then Christi grunted and pushed even more out, I thought her entire organs were coming out at one point  . Couldn't get my car out so took eldest's wee Corsa (I swear that car loves the snow!) and managed to get to the vets. Vet couldn't feel an egg either and reckoned she was just pushing against the already huge, swollen tissue. So, she's gone for the big sleep, poor wee thing was just never going to be an egg layer :(
