One Man Banned
Oh how I ache this evening! After the winds the other week and the neighbour over the way complaining this week about when we were getting it fixed - today was made the day! Went out and bought the necessary new posts, some metpost fixings, sledge hammer and some fixing bolts with a plan to simply hammer in the metposts stick the new posts in them, drill through and bolt them to the existing posts that have rotten through at the bottom. Sounds simple - reality much different! When Barratt built this d**ned forsaken house they decided to concrete in wooden fence posts then bury the bases under a foot of clay soil that's nicely helped to rot the timber After trying to smash the concrete with the sledge hammer and getting no-where fast I called a friend to borrow his huge drill thingy that hammers into concrete - After 4 hours in the garden this afternoon of wielding the hammer and using that drill I can't feel my right hand and my back is killing me! Still, it's now all fixed and not leaning to a funny angle The nicest thing though, spending all afternoon with the chickens out with us and Molly - now filled with an good dose of achievement 'Tis the little things eh? Mrs Frugal
Ahh, nice to have had such a lovely audience as you worked Andrew. Our fence posts are just the same. It's the easiest way for the builders to bung them in quickly, isn't it. Our job for the summer is to replace ours before they fall down. Glad you've got the job done. You can sit out there all summer and admire your handywork now .
Lesley
Funny - we were out today trying to work out where the next lot of fences should go - when are you coming over next, Andrew?
One Man Banned
Well.....oerr.........umnnn..... Think I'm busy for the next six months or so Lesley!! Unless I can drive the tractor that whacks the posts in! A xx

Trish
Andrew you have my sympathies. The only differnce between Barrat builders and 1947 council builders is that our fence posts are fix in with a wonderful concrete and brick mix, buried about 3 foor down and the posts themselves are steel reinforced concrete. They stay up okay but woe betide you if you want to get rid of one or two because you want to widen your drive
Lesley
That sounds like fun Trish - we had those posts where we used to live as well - a nightmare!

The Dogmother
me too I've got fence panels down too - the gaps are covered with temporary plastic fencing to stop the chooks getting out. they are on the side that doesn't belong to us, so the lovely hunky fireman next door will mend that

Popcorn
Andrew, you have done brilliantly. We wouldn't have a clue to how put a fence up. In your shoes, the fence would have been abandoned and the chickens would have been enjoying next doors organic vege's
The Dogmother
I don't mind doing fencing, in fact it's quite satisfying, but I can't do it on my own, so have to wait until Phil can help
Cinnamon
Fencing would come under the heading of "jobs that Sarah delegates to The Hubby" in our house. Luckily he is quite butch & fairly manly,so can get it done I quite like watching..................... BTW,any cooking, cleaning, tidying, shopping etc come under the heading "Jobs that The Hubby delegates to Sarah"
