Should I wear a mask when I am cleaning the eglu out? I keep reading about protecting the lungs from dust and I would hate for my lovely hens to be thecause of any health problems.

I always wear one. I bought some good quality ones off ebay.

I never see any dust and certainly would not be close enough to it if there was.

Unless you are particularly bad with dust then there is no need. OH wears one with the chickens at work but this is on a commercial scale with thousands of hens.

I do tie a scarf round my face when I'm sprinkling Stalosan F about but I'm sure I can still "taste" it for ages afterwards . I was thinking I probably should get a mask .

I don't wear a mask - didn't think anyone would have done.

As long as you're out in the open air, I wouldn't think dust from the would be too much of a problem

technically a mask should be worn when using any of the powders or clean products that we use under COSH regs'.also when cleaning out the hen houses or any other type of bird cage/housing due to the fact that most birds naturally dusty as they're skin tends not to get wet

if you don't use a mask or like me can't wear one ( I have Rhineitus not spelt right) spray the bedding with water from a plant mister to 'lay' the dust dust when damp/wet doesn't float so less chace to breath it in

It's a sensible precaution, particularly if you're using diatom. You're not likely to find it causes you any problem immediately, but you may well do later in life, so it's definintely one of those better safe than sorry things.
