Redwing
I seem to remember that last year an Omleteer bought two weaner piglets to raise for meat I know that Lesley had pigs also last year but this other person was keeping them for the first time I think so I am particularly interested to know how they got on Does anyone else have any tips on raising pigs please? pros and cons? Falkor
Having gone out with a pig farmer some years ago I used to make him strip at the back door before he was allowed to come in This was always amusing when we had company So my tip is - pig poo smells _ DOH! missuscluck
We have had pigs quite a few times. I can highly reccomend it as the pork is fantastic. They are lovley to keep. Really not much bother at all and a joy to watch them going about their happy piggy business. Dont have a problem with dispatch time either. Its been fine. When the time comes they are no longer cute and are generally much more grumpy than they were when they are small so they loose the cute factor. My hubby spoils them and has them rolling over for their tummys tickled when they are smaller Need feeding twice a day. They do like company and enjoy a good chase around the field or a game of footy. What ever area they are kept in they will turn to mud in the time you have them. You will need two or more as they are sociable animals. We usually do 6 as we have no problem selling the meat and never have enough to go round. Good luck whatever you decide. C&T
They are another thing on my wish list.... Not very viable in my postage stamp garden though!
Lesley
I'd say the same as Lynda - we've had 4 batches of weaners now and love having pigs. We had 7 in 2008 and 4 in 2009 and could have sold more each year. If you have enough space for them then the smell isn't an issue when keeping just a few - as long as you don't go rolling in their toilet area of course! The Dogmother
I can vouch for the taste of the pork from Lesley's piggies; it's delicious!
kinsk
Am new here and whilst I don't know much about hens, pigs I do know, we currently have 5 sows, 1 boar and about 25 ranging from 10 to 20 weeks. All old spots. Pigs are a joy to keep and relatively easy if you have the room. You can get the odd really smelly one but in general they aren't that bad (or maybe I've just got used to it )
Lesley
Welcome to the forum Kinsk! Shame you live too far away - we love Old Spots - we usually have Berkshires from a farm 15 minutes away.

Lesley
Cake will get you everywhere on here! Old spots are great, never had anything to do with berkshires so don't know anything about them. Do you get them live or packed? We buy weaners in April and grow them on - we have them butchered at the abattoir, most are pre-ordered and sold as half pig, butchered. We make our own bacon and sausages out of the pig that we don't sell.

TAJ
Ok well hubby has put his foot down (gently..) Apparently its either: Cade lambs OR Two piggies or? what is this word...? do not compute But either way do you keep the 48 chickens AND the extra 22 in the incy? Could you tell hubby you will reduce hens by two in place of the 2 piggies - that seems a compromise doesn't it? I love the idea of pigs.
