AJuff
I took my Grade 1 piano exam today and it didn't go too well. My hands were shaking through nerves and I made a few mistakes. Ho hum a few weeks to wait until I hear anything . . .

AJuff
Well I've been quizzing the kids about their piano/flute exam experiences and it seems they made a few mistakes too and still passed. Feeling a little more optimistic about that. It is sooooo irritating that i can play all my pieces perfectly at home but I can't in the exam. Alis girls
My son had D and V the day before his grad 3 clarinet and went along - burst into tears played and still passed so sure you'll be ok. Sweaty keyboard not a nice thought
Mrs Webmuppet
I too am learning piano but so far I have refused to take an exam as I know I will go to pieces under that kind of pressure ( and yet I can play in front of a bunch of people - providing they are sat behind me!) Chucky Mama
Well I've been quizzing the kids about their piano/flute exam experiences and it seems they made a few mistakes too and still passed. Feeling a little more optimistic about that. It is sooooo irritating that i can play all my pieces perfectly at home but I can't in the exam. I am sure that you will be fine They will have allowed for nerves especially for a grade 1. Mine have come out thinking they have done really badly and have gone on to get distinctions. If you have an old report sheet from one of your children's previous exams you can go through and mark yourself and see how high you think you scored. We always do this, we score one harshly and the other fairly and we usually get a pass either way. Good luck! I think the piano is really hard. Egluntyne
Well done. I got up to Grade 2 whilst the children were learning. All forgotten now.
AJuff
Why didn't you carry on? and why not take it back up? I just wish I'd started piano years ago . . starting in your 40s is not the best time to start!!! Although I am pleased I took the plunge, it's my insurance against old age as it will keep my brain active. My piano teacher rang this evening and we talked through how it went. He seems to think all will be ok and reassured me. I don't feel so bad now and I know I've done my best.
Guest
You don't need to get 100% to pass, you only need to get 66%. It's worth remembering that. Examiners recognise nerves too, so try not to worry. You can lose 50 marks and still s"Ooops, word censored!"e through! It's very early in the year for exams. What board did you take? Let us know when the results come
AJuff
RSM Associated Board. It was a special visit organised by a local music teacher. It was at her house which was really nice, much better than a church hall or school!!!
Guest
I see - a special! I wondered if it had got postponed because of the snow. You're in for a bit of a wait then. I hope it's not too long.
Egluntyne
Why didn't you carry on? and why not take it back up? The piano teacher , who was lovely, and very patient with an older learner, moved away and the children all reached the point of giving up/changing instruments, so I didn't bother to find another . I might take it up again one day.
docsquid
They will allow for nerves and you are definitely allowed a few mistakes, particularly at Grade I. I'm very pleased I learned at school - got to Grade VIII but am not that standard now by a long way, although can still play my Grade VI and VII pieces after a fashion. Played keyboards in a rock band when I was younger - sort of Marillion-ish. I learned Violin in my 20's and it was much harder and I only got to Grade IV! Have also dabbled with flute and can play guitar a bit. Not sure I'd want to learn a new instrument now.
AJuff
I PASSED!!!!!!!!! Woooooo Hoooooo! I got a PASS with 118 marks. Piano teacher said it was a 'high pass' and my new piano teacher for September said a 'very secure pass'. On the whole I am very pleased and I am going to put my certificate into a frame next to my children's! I feel a long way off Grade 2 I can tell you!! docsquid
The first one is always the most difficult because you don't know so much what to expect. Well done - 118 is a good pass, close to Merit (which was 120 in my day).
