Geoid
Pukka pads are the best Anyway about laptops: Macbooks are by far the best (in my opinion). But if you dont want to go for Apple, Dell is also good (like the Dell XPS)
quickcluck
We just got an Acer for our 19yr old and she loves it! Very long battery life.... very cute!
Geoid
Dont go for acer, they used to be good (and a few of them still are) but the majority are rubbish, cheaply made with rubbish parts etc. I speak from experience.
Chucky Mama
Dont go for acer, they used to be good (and a few of them still are) but the majority are rubbish, cheaply made with rubbish parts etc. I speak from experience. I'll echo this, we have 2 Acers and both are problematic. We wont buy Acer again.

Patricia W
Conversely, in defence of Acer, we've got one and my son's got one - and they are brilliant!

ladyjulian
I have a Samsung notebook which I use almost every day for work. It's fabulous, it's been going strong for a year, and I absolutely can't fault it.
redbug
Hi, I have been looking at these like the fact they can fit in a bag and are so portable at 10ins. Looked at samsung (quite a few to chose from) dell xps are they notepads.
The Dogmother
I used to have a Vaio in my old job, it was brilliant. I now have an old (ex-work) Hewlett Packard at home, which I have beefed up with more RAM, it's a good old workhorse and does really well. I have to say that we always buy a more robust type of laptop for the consultants at work as they get a lot of wear. I recently got a really good deal (someone owed me a favour) on an Asus nettie and I am delighted with it. At the end of the day, a portable computer is always going to be a lot less robust than a desktop PC; the keyboards are usually the first to go. I have to get my boss a new laptop roughly every year. Christian
I have a Mac ibook G4. Nearly 4 years old now but still going strong. Chook n Boo Mum
......... When the money tree produces fruit When it does bear fruit Christian, will you be taking cuttings?!?!? DS has an Acer Aspire 1...I'm using it now as a matter of fact, it's fine for internet access & wordprocessing that I would need, though of course his Nibs isn't happy with it because it isn't a Mac........it also only cost £150 in a special offer at Asda & wouldn't be such a horror if it was lost or broken at school......he doesn't see that though!! docsquid
We have a Dell and it is pretty good and reliable. However I am never going to buy a PC again - it will be a Mac from now on!
Geoid
Some brands that I would recommend would be: Apple Dell Mesh computers Sony Vaio Asus Alienware
majorbloodnock
Worth bearing in mind, though, that perception and reality don't always coincide. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/28/which_laptop_survey/ Basically, the survey carried out by Which? found that on average 13% of laptop buyers had a problem that required a repair. When looking at specific brands, Apple was slap bang on that average, whilst top of the list were Sony and Toshiba, each with only 7% of their customers needing a repair of some sort. That said, whilst it's more likely you'll need to repair a Mac than a Sony or Tosh, you'll find Apple's customer service is by far the most likely to leave you satisfied overall. All this is irrespective, of course, of what you think about the operating system.
majorbloodnock
Actually, that last article I posted was end of 2008. One from end of last year, however, shows a similar story http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2009/11/18/laptop_reliable/ In this case, it seems Asus have come out top, followed by Tosh, Sony and then Apple. Dell is bang in the middle and HP came out at the bottom.
