Guest
as a slightly (not very) related follow-up.. I've just been to conduct a funeral... I don't normally blub at funerals I conduct - but the crem has a new sound system (about time) - and at the end of the service today we sat and listened to the whole of Eva Cassidy's "Somewhere over the Rainbow" - awesome sound quality - you could hear every note and every breath today... quite brought a tear to my eye.. anyway - Eva might have made a CD recommendation of the month if she hadn't become so popular in recent years (and - shame - a bit hackneyed!!) Leaving that aside, though - I had Eva Cassidy albums before she was as popular as she is today - and she had one awesomely pure and evocative voice - she doesn't overdo it, but she does enough!! wow!! (except it's not as cool to like Eva as it was 20 years ago - 'cos everyone has her albums now, and everyone has her singing Over the Rainbow at their funeral!! I still think hers is the definitive version, though!!) don't know what it was about today - maybe it was the lovely bloke who's wife had died - or the fact that everyone else was blubbing... quite set me off! Guest
A much nicer send-off anyway than the 'Blue is the colour, football is the game' track that was played as the coffin went out of church once. It wasn't our church, just a funeral I was playing for somewhere else and the departed man was in his 80s.

Guest
That you could show emotion will have meant a great deal to the relatives of the lady whose funeral it was. it was just a little tear in the corner of my eye - not a full blown blubbing session (I hasten to add!!) Cinnamon
The Hubby has always said he wants that song that goes "come up & see me,make me smile......" at his send-off. Can't remember who its by or what its called, but I am sure you all know which one I mean. I want "Otherside" by The Chilli Peppers Eva Cassidys "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is just beautiful
Mrs Frugal
It's "Come up and see me (Make me smile) by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, Sarah. I love that song. I'm going out to "Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye" by Gracie Fields !

Cinnamon
Great choice,Kate. Yes,of course its Cockney Rebel - how could I have forgotten that? I wonder if many people do the "Love Actually" thing & have "Bye,Bye,Baby" ?
Egluntyne
I'm going out to "Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye" by Gracie Fields ! I want the Shipping Forecast booming out as the curtains close for the last time. I've always loved to hear it. Him Indoors wants a particular racing commentary by Peter O'Sullevan as he sets off towards the Pearly gates.
Guest
I'm going out to "Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye" by Gracie Fields ! I want 'Club Tropicana' by Wham - always gets me up dancing, and I fancy something bouncy for my last goodbye.
Guest
I love hearing all your ideas and wishes. It makes me smile to hear what you've thought of. I think I'm quite sheltered and narrow in these things really! I have always wanted a full-blown Mozart Requiem, though I am very tempted by Fauré, with Harris' 'Faire is the heaven' at the end. The merits of your personal choices are that they will leave your mourners with a smile on their faces and your personality will be right there with them. That is a really good thing and probably a lot better than my formal selection!
Cinnamon
Club Tropicana - Oooo - thats a good one. You should make sure everyone wear tropical shirts & has a cocktail as well I can see this splitting into another thread................ Egluntyne
A lovely friend of mine who died of cancer of the pancreas at the obscenely young age of 43 had Dancing on the Ceiling by Lionel Ritchie. It was so typical of her....and absolutely perfect.
Paola
At the last funeral that I went to, the chap was carried into and out of the church to the Star Wars theme He was only in his twenties. It was the worst and best (if you know what I mean) funeral I have ever been to.
Guest
The absolute most evocative piece of music I have used at a funeral was for a young baby called Jed - up in Hartlepool. His parents were such fabulous people - and they knew what they wanted - they chose Teardrop by Massive Attack the back-beat sounds like a heartbeat. Tears rolled down my cheeks (and theirs) as we listened to it - and to this day I cannot listen to that track without stopping, sitting down and listening and thinking of them and baby Jed. I love Massive Attack, anyway - but this song will always have the power to make me crumble... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leY0bDsfbeM Phil

Cinnamon
It is a great song that one,Phil. One that always makes me well-up is "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M. My Sister-in-Law died at the age of 38 about 6 years ago & we were very close. I chose to have this played at her funeral,& it was very fitting,as it is the sort of song that crosses age divides. Jools
I agree with Phil about Eva's Somewhere over the Rainbow - the very best ever and it never ever fails to make me cry. I don't want anyone crying at my funeral, so I want to played out with Monty Python's Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. Hubby wants the theme tune to Only Fools and Horses. Men!! I don't want anyone crying at my funeral, so I want to played out with Monty Python's Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. My experience is that the more personal a song is (regardless of how bouncy or happy it is) the more people will cry!! Trust me - they will blub their eyes out if you have the Monty Python - and that's a good thing!! A funeral service should have tears - it should also have laughter... (often both at the same time!) the best way to have people NOT crying at your funeral is to be a mean and nasty old witch and have no friends!! I've done plenty of them - and then people don't generally cry!! At my Dad's funeral service we finished with "Bring me Sunshine" by Eric and Ernie - because that was his absolute fvourite TV programme - Everyone blubbed!! Cinnamon
Well, I have made it quite clear to everyone I know that I don't really want a funeral, just a private cremation, then some sort of farewell bash...preferably at a pub However,I fully expect my wishes to be ignored by some more traditional members of my family. Therefore, maybe I should INSIST on something truly shocking....like "Gay Bar" by Electric Six
Guest
Therefore, maybe I should INSIST on something truly shocking....like "Gay Bar" by Electric Six [/color] you go for it - it'd be awesome.. of course - there is no legal requirement for anyone to respect your wishes - it's up to the "Chief Mourner" - whoever the funeral directors determine that to be... so it'll probably "Abide with me" and "The Lord's my Shepherd" followed by some nodescript organ music and some curly sandwiches at Aunty Flo's... Guest
Simon has said he wants *re light my fire* by will young nahhh - get him to go the whole hog and have "Firestarter" by the Prodigy (I know someone who did this - but he had meant it as a joke and was taken seriously by those organising the funeral!!) Guest
so it'll probably "Abide with me" and "The Lord's my Shepherd" Phil The classic 'C + A' as we call it! (Crimond and Abide with me). Some people want these at their wedding!
