Chickendoodle
Last Thursday our boiler broke down - it is a combination boiler so that meant we had no hot water as well as no heating. It is under maintenance but we had severe snow last week and the engineer couldn't get to us until Saturday. On Saturday our washing machine died - it has been on the cards for a while but had to choose that day to finally give up. Had to buy a new one DH said he wondered what the third thing would be - I said don't be silly that's just an old wives tale This morning my car wouldn't start and has had to be towed away to the garage. It is only 4 months out of warranty I won't be dismissing old wives tales in the future

Seagazer
Oh dear, I know it probably is an old wives tale but if a couple of things happen I always wait for the 3rd to come along Hopefully that'll be it now for you.
Egluntyne
Break a match and stop the run of bad luck in its tracks. Not that I'm superstitious or anything.
Chickendoodle
I'd have to go and buy some matches to break one. Can I break something else instead
The Dogmother
I'd have to go and buy some matches to break one. Can I break something else instead you'd have to speak to cookie monster - she's the expert in breakinng things

Ain't Nobody Here
Bad luck, Chickendoodle . It's always expensive things too . I walked under a ladder yesterday . I had a moment's hesitation but it would have been so obvious if I'd stopped and gone round it, I just went under .
docsquid
Oh dear - lots of expensive things all at once I could give you a long and statistical explanation about clustering of rare events, but I won't - just say bad luck and sorry to hear it! Sheilaz
...I could give you a long and statistical explanation about clustering of rare events, but I won't! Well I'd read it, sounds just my cup of tea. Although I do wonder why my family leave the room when I explain about not coincidental "coincidences". Poor Chickendoodle, how unfortunate & expensive. chelsea
Oh dear you poor things - can't get much worse can it?! Sending you some lovely sunny Devonshire positive vibes to push those horrible happenings away for you!
Lesley
It's never the cheaper items that breakdown in threes is it - I hope that's it now.
Chickendoodle
Well a bit of luck I suppose - the garage called yesterday and said that they could find nothing wrong with the car - it started perfectly and they had done all the computer monitoring on it etc. It wouldn't start at 8am when I tried it, at 9am when DH tried it and at 11am when the recovery driver tried it! I know nothing about cars but the starter motor was whirring and not connecting with the engine? I would really rather they had found a fault and fixed it, even at some cost, than to worry it is going to happen again. It was very cold yesterday morning (-2) but it has been that cold and worse before and the car has started fine. Off now to arrange some breakdown cover! docsquid
That is good news. I wonder if there was damp in the electrics?

Exactly the same thing happened to me with my 12 year old Metro. The mechanic got the car to start first time. I had a new starter motor fitted and it still goes now (I sold the car to a neighbour, it is now 16 years old and purrs like new!).
