Lungworm and dogs.....

Recommended Posts

I was talking to someone today who had to have his Lab pts on Boxing Day. The dog hadn't been well since September with a cough which the Vet said was kennel cough. Despite meds. the dog just didn't get better.

Just before Christmas tests proved that the dog had contracted Lungworm and meds were changed. The dog just went downhill and stopped eating or drinking on Christmas Eve. He was 12 years old and was suffering.

The owner asked the Vet about Lungworm as he'd not heard of it in dogs and the Vet said that it was the third case he'd seen in as many weeks and he'd had phone calls from another Vet asking about dogs he was seeing with the same thing. It appears that dogs from other countries are bringing it here and it spreads via slugs and snails........and, therefore, birds. It has been spreading in the last 12 months.

He was heartbroken and said that if our dogs develop a cough to ask that the Vet checks straight away for Lungworm.

We vaccinate the cows against Lungworm but had never heard of it being a problem for dogs - just thought I'd pass on the info. even though I can't verify any of it.

The specialist vet where I take my cat has loads of posters up about Lungworm and dogs. They can pick it up just from a slimy slug or snail trail or drinking water that they have been through- they don't have to eat the slugs or snails. It seems to be on the increase as I had never seen advertisements about it before so it really is worth being aware of. :(:( Sorry to hear about your friends dog, Lesley.

I'd been told about this too; vets are on a mission at the moment as Advocate has a new ad campaign going on and are offering commission linked to vet sales (well, in this area anyway), I asked my vet for an honest opinion as Ruby is always walking across livestock fields with me, and he said that it is pretty rare and not to worry unduly unless she starts to cough.
