Which breeds lay blue or green eggs?

Recommended Posts

hybrids don't lay coloured eggs as far as I'm aware. Auracaunas lay green (I think) and cream legbars lay blue, but I think it's only an 80%chance - I've got a cream legbar and she lays pale blue eggs, if they don't I think they're white.

I'm sure someone more certain will be along shortly!! :D

Cream Legbars are a pure breed and should lay blue or green eggs

Araucanas are also a pure breed and should lay blue or green eggs

There is a type of hybrid that has an 80% chance of laying a blue/green egg the other 20% laying white/pinky coloured ones. This breed is called a Skyline/Columbine.

My skyline lays blue eggs - as said above, they could have been anything from green through to coral apparently. The last couple were a bit pooey, so I cleaned them and they go a sort of khaki colour when wet!

They actually look a bit paler than they're showing in this photo. I was so thrilled to get an egg that wasn't brown, though! (Shallow, me? never! )

It is all about the purity of the stock Cream Legbars should be laying blue eggs 100% - anything else and they are not a true 100% pure breed. The different named hybrids have a 70-80% chance of laying a blue/green egg.

The key thing for me is that unlike brown egg layers the hybrid blue egg layers do not have a vast difference in egg production - most blue hybrid layers are only quoted at about 40 eggs more per year than the pure breeds and you risk getting one that doesn't lay blue eggs - in brown egg layer breeds the hybrid could be 100 more eggs per year, so if egg production is key you might select a hybrid, if egg colour is key then get a pure breed.
