Plum
Found a 1.5 cm lump on Motmot, about 1 1/2" below vent. No discharge, inflamation, heat or head to it. These is a tiny purple mark. Any ideas?? Wondered if some beastie had laid eggs in her. It's below the surface but not attached underneath. I've sprayed her with Johnson's just in case but I don't know. Hope it's not a growth Edited June 3, 2010 by Guest
Chucky Mama
Don't think it sounds like flystrike but it could be an abcess I suppose. Have a good look and see if there is a head or a thinner patch of skin that it might burst out of.
Egluntyne
Article on flystrike **here** I think it might be a bit early in the year tbh.
Plum
Thanks both of you. Doesn't match description given Egluntyne on that article so guess it may be an abcess. Will have a better look tomorrow.
Snowy
Could it be an ingrown feather? Sounds a possibility from the description of the purple spot That would cause an abcess type lump.
Plum
Ah that's an idea.

Plum
Oh no I may like cleaning out dirty belly buttons and between crusty toes but digging out a feather is a job for a professional

Plum
Update.. I took Motmot to vet at the time and after aspirating and just getting blood he said it was a tumour and wouldn't remove it even though it wasn't attached to any organ. It carried on growing and turned into a red lump and monday the others pecked it and her vent. Yuk lot of blood so she was isolated etc., Got to vet this morning and saw poultry vet who 'pinged' it out - sebaceous cyst Size of a walnut sat on the table I could have kissed her. She's given me Dermisol cream for the sloughy tissue on her vent and it's clearing it up already. So I'll remember that one for others. Wish I had seen her when Eider had a nasty prolapse. She's my hero.

laurmurf
thank goodness for the tenacity of Plum...others would have regretfully given up with the first vet's diagnosis, but not PLUM! Well done that vet and phew for Motmot!

mostin
Wow What an update, now I know I truly am supposed to work for the NHS because I would have loved to have seen that thing ping out . So glad she is going to make it, and that you have had a good outcome after all this worry. Poor little Mot mot though , please give her a specal cuddle from me when she is up to it xxxxxx
Plum
First person I thought of was you. She's fine in herself and would love a cuddle. The hole is closing up well and her vent cleaned up but she has been dripping loads of fluids from her vent and niffs a bit. Then this afternoon she went to lay and couldn't get the egg out it was just bringing her insides out so I helped her and she tore a bit but everything went straight back so I've started her on anti inflammatories and it's back to vet tomorrow
mostin
poor Mot mot, fingers crossed for the vet tomorrow xxxx
Plum
Thanks Mostin, hopefully things will settle down ok. Perhaps she has infection of laying track and antibiotics will sort it out.
Plum
Been to vet and got antibiotics but boy does she niff at the rear end sort of dead animal manky smell The clear fluid turns into gritty white stuff on her feathers, most odd. She's fine in herself. Hopefully this will clear things up.
mostin
Fingers crossed for her, poor little love
chick wiggle
Awww, Bless her, how is she today Plum?
Plum
Thanks for asking, she is fine but smells manky and still sopping wet guess it'll take a while to clear. I don't have any confidence in vet I saw so I'll give her a few days and go back to poultry vet. Wondering if its fungal but the white stuff on feathers is gritty like urates not thready. Very strange.
The Dogmother
Sounds like Vent Gleet to me - that smells rank. It's a fungal infection of the digestive system, Nystatin and ACV in the water will fix it.
