The breeder I met today was like a Chicken Whisperer! He demonstrated how to make a hybrid have a nap. He tucked the head under the wing, rocked her back and forward a few times then set her gently on the floor of the run and Hey Presto! A sleepin chook

I've got to say, i was thinking., Oh my goodness what a sick individual!

But good that it wasn't 'putting to sleep' that you saw.. i practised on my own silkie, she didnt want to play, and pecked me.

No I am still a bit nervous handling them I have to admit. And they are only wee tooties!

Some big chickens are scary. The breeder today had a buff cockerel orpington that would have scared the bejaysus out of a rottweiler - I was glad it was on the other side of a fence!

I can send Pigeon to sleep by having her on my lap and keep stroking the back of her head but it takes about 5 mins.

Our chickens go to sleep all the time verywhere anyway... one of them always seems to be asleep (except when I'm giving treats...)

OK my rubbish wee phone doesnt do video but if my husband's does I will take it along when I go back and post it on youtube!

Honestly it was amazing. The man said his father used to be one of the biggest breeders in England and so he was brought up around chickens. Perhaps he learned the skill at his father's knee!

One of my friends, when he was a child, used to do it as a party trick!!

He would have 10 hens all in a row on their backs fast asleep!!!!

It must make them so dizzy and disorientated that they can't move, kinda like going on one of those roundabouts at local parks - but chickens aren't stupid enough to try walking unlike us humans

Yes my sisiter and I used to do this when we were kids and holidaying on a farm. We used to get a row of half a dozen "sleeping" chooks. looked very funny but in retrospect not really very chicken friendly and not soemhting I would do now, poor wee things!
