Pets at Home vets

Recommended Posts

I popped into my local Pets at Home and was plesantly surprised following a recent revamp. They even have a section on Chickens with some good products.( Pellets, corn, feeders, mite powder etc etc, although the chicken house looked well dodgy)

They also have a vet service which is open during shop hours which I think is 10-7 including weekends which is pretty good. And they treat chickens :D .Anyone had an experience with a pets at home vet :?:

rachel, iwasn't saying there was a problem with the vets and in any case this is a new service.

Hi - sorry, I know you weren't :) I worded that awkwardly - I just meant I'd never heard anything that suggested anyone should avoid them. I'll definitely be looking to see if my local one covers chickens as they've just got a vets as well.

I will investigate mu P at H. I had already discovered chicken bit and avoided reptile bit. I like it when they ask " did you find everything you wanted" I always say "yes thanks - but please keep reptiles away from cat, chuck and bunny bit as I dont like them". Must investigate chicken vet

Yes I do.

Companion Care or something?

They killed my reptile after they claimed they had the knowledge to treat it and then i got more of a "whoops" than an apology and then they have the nerve to ask if they could use the diagostic results for childrens activities!!!!

I'd never send anyone there. Never ever. Ever.

After i spent £700 on diagnostics and the "reptile specialist" still didn't know so he thought i was being delusional and the rep was being awkward instead of referring me.

I followed his advice but sent the diagnostics off to other "reptile specialists" that were recommended by reptile keepers.

Unfortunately the reptile died slowly and painfully before i got a response from the other specialist but when i did most of them stated that it need surgery asap because it looked like x, y and z.

Lesson learned, but it was a hard one. I really don't trust any vet anymore which is not fair on me because i really stress out when they get sick.

I know you should really tar them all with the same brush, but it's hard not to. Find someone local who has several chickens who loves their chickens - maybe a chicken rescue or something - and see which vet they use is my opinion.

As for them stocking things for chickens. Well the people that work in the shop don't even know anything about dogs so i doubt they would chickens whereas when you go to a specialist poultry supplier, they do.

Just a little word of caution. I would very much doubt that there is a chicken 'specialist' in every Pets At Home. Tricky has found that there is someone that has a chicken 'interest' at theirs but just as with any vet there may well be some branches that have someone that does chickens and others that don't. Also remember that the person with the interest in chickens is not always on duty. Also bear in mind when choosing your vet make sure that you are close enough to get there in an emergency and this is not always the surgery that you visit during the day. Many have emergency cover that is miles away. Lets face it, things have a habit of going pear shaped in the night and at weekends - especially Bank Holiday weekends

Thanks for the post though Tricky

When i took my black rock to Pets at home i was charged a 'new patient' fee on top of normal consultation fee and charged to have her PTS. I took her home to dispose of her (Put her a shoebox then in the bin! ) because i scared how much more they'd charge me! £40 bill. The vets i deal with now has a bird specialist i can call when ever i need and only charged £24 to see and eventually PTS my ex-batt (Including disposal) I know it always the money but i got a much nicer vibe at the other vets practice. Every one is different though isn't it?
