francesca88
So I just bought a brand new chicken coop/run for my chooks as mum was complaining about the state of the garden (!) but have noticed today that it is already getting a bit whiffy. Run is completely covered by a roof and is also shaded by trees so the ground should not get too damp down there - my question is this; would I be better off buying Stalosan F or garden lime to lessen the smell?? Thanks in advance!

Plum
For the garden, garden lime will neutralise the chicken droppings and thereby kill nasties and worm eggs etc., you sprinkle and dig or rake it into the soil. The StalasanF is good for putting down in run particularly covered where it will kill nasties and neutralise things plus dry out the area. Good for using in covered run or sprinkling on bedding between cleanouts. Also use it before introducing new girls. At least that is what I do and the instructions tell you to do. Ooerr I am doing what I'm told

chickyhazel
We use garden lime and it's great, and also feed garlic to make the poos smell nicer.
Plum
I think the advice is to dig it in or let it wash in with rain before putting your chickens on it. Take care not to get builders lime which is caustic.
