Pet insurance?

Recommended Posts

I've decided to look at pet insurance for the kittens

:?: any recommendations, or firms to avoid :?: There are so many now! Even supermarkets offer it. :?

How much should it cost? all the websites want you to enter all your personal details before they'll tell you. I object to doing that because you end up getting so much junk email afterwards (it doesn't seem to matter if you tick the box saying you don't want any).

Thanks for you help

I've had mine since they were 5 motnhs, got them insured straight away with pet plan as they normally have an offer on for 1-3 months free when u start. Also if im insured with them the vets we use will claim straight from them

I pay £19 a month for both and thats for the full cover.. Definately cant stress enought the importance of having it! Our last cat worked up a bill of £2500 and if u see my thread cat being sick at the moment you will see how quickly things mount up!

Pet Plan, Sainsburys are both good - avoid E& L, petinsurance.co.uk, Animal Friends& Argos.

Ensure you are covered for a minimum of £4000 per condition. Ideally you should go for 'lifetime cover' (means if they get something when they are young policy will continue to cover that condition for life. This is very important e.g Tescos will cover you but if a condition is treated it will pay up for a year only. After a year and you then wont get any further payment for that condition plus you can't be covered for it by anyone else.

M&S have paid out very promptly for us with no quibbles, on both times we've claimed. The last time was for over £3600 for eye surgery! I would definitely recommend them. The policy we have also gives you unlimited funding per condition - some put a cap on how much you can claim per illness/injury, so watch out for that.

Highly recommend Pet Plan. We are on our third German Shepherd now and have always used them. They may not be economical with regards to monthly payments but they seem to have a good reputation with veterinary surgeons. With our dear Bracken  we claimed nearly £4000 last premium year and apart from the excess we never paid anything as the bill was settled directly between Pet Plan and the vets, no quibble.

We've also got the "covered for life" policy which means we can claim for old age conditions such as arthritis. German Shepherds are prone to several ailments so we prefer to pay dearer for better cover.
