Woodchips vs Straw

Recommended Posts

Don't use hay for chooks as it can harbour spores which give rise to a nasty disease beginning with asp (can't remember its name I'm afraid, but it can be fatal). Straw is OK but some dim birds have been known to eat it causing blocked crops.

I wouldn't recommend straw

I have read that iit can be wet underneath although it seems dry on top. And in the nest its more problematic to change a small area if it gets dirty due to the length and how the straw cris crosses- does that make sense - with bedding material or woodchips you can simply and easily remove and replace a small dirty area. I'm currently trying out cross shredded paper for the same reason

But each to their own and straw may be easier if you have a free or cheap local supply for example.

Definately not hay - it can be bad for them

Hope that helps

I use woodchip in the run and straw in the nest box, also in the penned off aera we let them free-range in i find leaving a layer of straw makes everything easyer to rake up and clean. at £2.50 a huge bale from our local farm its well worh it. Lasts a few months per bale.
