You had to be there.

Well, our French neighbour (a very experienced chicken keeper) came over the lane to have a look at "Blanche/Raymond" he took one look and said She is a cockerel. His own coq has just departed this world after four years of happy life with his huge flock, so.....off he went down the drive, huge smile on his face, his hat at a jaunty angle (very French) with his "new" cockerel under his arm.

Now, poor Cecile (his wife) is just thinking....quiet mornings with no coq crowing...and along comes Hubby and what's he got under his arm - a present from Les Anglaises across the lane - a new COCKEREL  we had visions of the frying-pan meeting Hubbys head with a very loud "DONGGGGG":lol::lol::D

He came back 30 minutes later with one of his own table birds from the freezer and today he is giving us a Naked Neck hen in return for Raymond. Apparantly Ginger (our rehomed "bully") is living very happily, away from the flock on her own (which has been of her own choosing) and has become his sons pet chicken ! Raymond won't have to be eaten.....yet.:D:D

Naked Necks do tend to have looks that only their mother could love :( over here everybody has them, they are the most widely seen chicken, mainly because of their dual-purposeness (is there such a word ??) our immediate neighbour has a flock of twenty very young ones (8 to 10 weeks old) and they look sooo cute in an ugly way :?

I don't think Charlie will be in "chicken love" the same as he is with Bluebelle and Nugget  I, on the other hand will be "the mother that loves her":D

Oh and ps. A huge thank you to everyone for their help and advice with Blanche/Raymond. Being new to chicken keeping we were so grateful to everyone for their replies, it's very reassuring to know that you are all out there. This is such a good forum, it's like.....family :clap:

It could only happen in France - the story continues....today we went to market, saw little old French Geez who sells the chickens/cockerels/ducks/guinea fowl (and also sold us Raymond as a hen - I think his eyesight is not so good) and gluttons for punishment that we are - we bought two new girls - another Bluebelle and another Light Sussex. Hope it's not another Raymond  we have called these two Blanche (try again) and Lilac. :D no-one could ever say we give up easily :D
