Finally Pippa has gone

Recommended Posts

After months and months of Pippa bullying Carol and Alice, pulling feathers and generally making their lives a misery I have found a local animal park who are willing to take her on. She has spent the last eight weeks in solitary but this made no difference to her feather pulling desires so today I took her along to her new home with half a dozen other hens and a cockerel to keep them in order. Although I was sad to see her go I think this will be better all round as she will be able to make new friends and Carol and Alice can now recover and start to lead a better life.

However I have desires to have more than two hens so I'm hoping after a few weeks to add two more hens, I was hoping to get some Bluebelles as I have heard they are quite placid so I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get some in, or near to, the Fife area of Scotland.

Our bluebelle is very skittish and the least tame of all of our chickens. I would recommend a plain "brown" hen. We have Bovans Goldlines. We had one who we lost to a fox and then bought another. Both of them had/have lovely personalities - are very tame, very curious and very gentle. Our other hybrids (all different colours) are nowhere near as lovely as the "brown" ones - and we would certainly get this type again.

Sorry that Pippa has had to go. It must have been a very tough decision for you but have had to think of the best for all your hens. I hope Pippa settles in her new home.

I'm amazed at the different personalities chickens have. So far I have been fortunate that none have seemed aggressive. Good luck with your new hens. :D

My niece has Bluebelles and hers are very docile, guess its all down to the individual hen. I would still like to find a local breeder of them if possible so I can go and have a look. Hope someone can come up with a contact for me.

Hi there - I got my last 3 ladies from http://www.henkeepingfife.co.uk - just outside Dairsie.

I have visited her in the past to look at the cube 'in action' she didn't have any Bluebelles at that time but I might contact her to see if she knows of any. I don't know much about marans, I'm really looking for something large enough to not be bullied by my remaining Black Rocks and that also lay reasonable size eggs for cooking with.

I'm on a waiting list for a cuckoo maran. I would think they would be fine with a black rock. They supposedly lay dark chocolate brown eggs but I shall wait and see.

Just re-read that. Laying dark chocolate brown eggs - lovely. Or milk chocolate.... yummy...not fussy...
