And then there were eleven....

Recommended Posts

Well, some news at last - I have 6 cheeping eggs that are all making pipping noises. Two - the last barred wyandotte, and a gold laced - aren't making any noises yet. Not a bad conversion really, especially as the 4 barred eggs were suspect anyhow.

So, out of the 8 which were valid at candling, 6 look set to hatch at this moment in time.

It's still very dry out there, so I misted the Aubiose in the Eglu this morning while the laydees were having their constitutional, just to increase the humidity and help them to hatch.

I will post pictures if there are any hatchlings at lunchtime.

What sort?

Rosie got in from school and called me, wanting to lift the hens off for a look  She may be a seasoned chicken wrangler, but I don't like disturbing hatching hens; she'll have to wait until I get home and pop them off for a comfort stop - we'll try to get some photos then.

Well, I had two last night, 4 this morning and when I went to look an hour later, they had been joined by two wee wet chickies, so 6 in all. They are gorgeous :D

I haven't managed to see all of them together yet, but I think we have 4 x German Lanshans and 2 x Gold laced wyandottes, all bantams. I have one gold laced and the one remaining barred 'dotte egg that haven't hatched - no noises from either of them. I suspect that they are duds, but will give them another day and dissect to check on the development if there's no sign of hatching.

Photos will be blogged as soon as I get to download them

Well, here are the photos, excuse the long post...:roll:

Here are the two from last night, please excuse the quality of the photos, it was very hard to balance a squirmy chick in one hand and take photos with the other.. you have no idea of how many photos I have discarded!

You will be relieved to hear that I have put down some non-slip flooring for them today.

This one is nearly out....

I collected Rosie after her swimming training and she was asking about the chicks; 'are they so soft that you have to feel them with your cheek?' Well, they are about as lively as demented bumblebees and as soft as a whisper.

I got some better photos when Rosie could hold them.

This morning when I went down there were four wee chicks, two of each and two more eggs pipping.

I left them with some chick crumb to start on eating as the oldest are coming up for 24 hours old and will start to need food now. Went back an hour later and there were 6 chicks - the four had been joined by 2 tiny, damp chicks. I haven't been able to see them all together yet, but it looks like I have four German Langshans (so a 100% hatch rate from them :D ) and 2 gold laced wyandottes. The remaining 2 eggs - 1 gold laced and the last barred aren't cheeping or pipping so are probably duds. I will give them to the end of today and if they don't look like hatching then I will dissect the eggs to see what stage they died at.

Weeeeellll, I had two eggs that looked like they weren't going to hatch - the gold laced and the barred - the latter is the one that I really wanted to hatch as it's the last of a dud batch. Last night it was cheeping, so I popped it back under the mums and expected to see a little humbug chick in the morning.

Came down this morning to find all the mummies and babies in the run, taking the air, the dud gold laced egg discarded in the run (can't reach it, will have to crawl in later), and the barred egg still pipping and cheeping in the eglu, with no-one to keep it warm. I am now at work with a sports bra/crop top on under my work clothes (thank goodness that Friday is casual day) and a little egg pipping and cheeping in a tissue down my front!!!

Thanks goodness that I have an office to myself!

It seems quite happy, I have moistened the shell slightly and it's pipping away. The grand plan is (if it hatches) to pop it in under the mummies tonight when they've gone all dopey and hope that they accept it.

Fingers crossed!
