ISCA
I have not used Ebay for many years but have seen some items that are good as new returns for a major online pet supplier. I have bidded but then I was outbid so I bid again, as you do. Now I have bid £1 over what I said would be my maximum bid But it's getting personal and I am quite competitive at times (not one of my better qualities I must admit) and now it's getting personal. I WILL NOT be out bid Is it just me or is that how others can be when in a bidding war on ebay? I will not bid again, so if I am outbid I loose out. But it is a bargain
Cinnamon
I never bid,I SNIPE Its much safer - I barely ever lose an item plus the end cost is kept down as there is less chance of a bidding war. Try Auctionsniper - thats who I use to steathily put on a sneaky bid 3 seconds before the auction ends
Olly
I think this is why you can sometimes see items sell for more than their normal price - it does get a bit personal! I'm awful for this, so I have to decide on a maximum figure and then walk away. I also learned not to bid too early. How long have you got before the auction ends? ISCA
38 minutes! I am on tenterhooks Edit: I didn't win but am now relieved I stopped when I did. The item is reduced by 50% on thei sellers own site! It sold for just £13 less than new as a returned second. At least the seller got a decent price for the item
Blackrocksrock
Auction sniping is awful - I dont think it should be allowed as its really sneaky - if you want an item - put in the bid you are happy with and if you get it fine and if not well you tried and as stated could be well above another shops price anyway. But everyone does it & it keeps the price down....I get things cheaper by sniping *shrug* You still have a top level snipe anyhow,so if i didn't want to pay more than say £5 for an item,I would set the snipe for that amount & if it goes higher, then so be it. I can also set a snipe right at the start of an auction, then put it on watch via my eBay,so I don't have to worry about it. I am a fan
Reikiranf
I snipe too but I just wait until a few minutes before the auction is ending and then put in a bid it usually works I never put in an early bid as I know there are people out there who bid to push prices up as a bit of fun Plus some people don't like to be beaten so keep upping their bid. I decide what I'm prepared to pay for something & don't go above it.
ISCA
Well I have now realised that everything I was interested in from the supplier (returned goods either not wanted or damaged) seem to be selling for virtually the same price as new items when you add on postage! With my online discount and extra discount codes and free postage I can get the same items new for virtually the same price and with that you have the back-up of being able to return items if necessary. All the sniping etc seems to rather defeat the object of an auction IMO. I remember the bidding used to be part of the fun, now it seems pointless. Anyway, I have decided to abandon my newfound but brief foray with Ebay. The trouble and strife dosn't seem worth it Also I have heard many tales of woe of from friends and colleagues who have been stung on Ebay I am sure you can pick up some bargains still but the whole ethos seems to have changed markedly (and not for the better) from when I first used it, many, many years ago. Thats progress I guess Sorry, I am ranting this morning
Egluntyne
I've seen 2nd hand Eglus go for more than the price of a new one on 2 occasions, and on several occasions very nearly the price of a new one , buy the time you have factored in the cost of delivery/a tank full of petrol to collect it, it seems barmy, especially for a few quid more you could have a brand new one, plus the guarantee. Try Auctionsniper - thats who I use to steathily put on a sneaky bid 3 seconds before the auction ends With my electronic timer I can out snipe 'Auctionsniper', I won this with 1 second to go. There were 5 bidders too. Cost £197.00 including carriage, UK retail price £410.00 + VAT. I was suprised at the price I paid too... It's a big valve, fast road cylinder head for me old 1970 Cortina 1600E. (takes petrol head hat off)....
ISCA
Thanks for pointing that out as I had no idea what it was you had bought there!
Tutti Frutti
It's a big valve, fast road cylinder head for me old 1970 Cortina 1600E It's ummm very red My brother had a 1600E when I was a kiddie. I too leave bidding until the last few seconds. I got fed up being top bidder for the length of the auction, showing my price - it's like showing my cards in a game of poker! I've won the last few things and out-sniped the snipers which is a good feeling. At least I do it manually! I've just sold a couple of things to people who were nearly sniped - but fortunately they set up maximum bids so still won. The problem with sniping is, if you really really want it and don't set a high enough max bid, you're outbid regardless and don't have time to bid again. (does that make sense or am I rambling now?!) Makes sense to me. The bid I put in was £250.00 I won it for £167.00 + £30.00 carriage. Like I said I was really suprised it only went for £167.00. It must have been a very slow day on eBay, but I didn't mind......
Geoid
Sniping doesn't work, Just put your highest bid in early (make it a strange amount like £21.46), if anyone snipes for say £20, you will win, as you put the bid in first
ISCA
Well my luck was in for the final item I had bid on! Nothing exciting though, a hooded cat litter toilet for £5 + postage = £11 (usual price £25) Obviously the fottball had distracted other buyers.
