Tiggy
no matter how i try my girls kick all sorts from the floor into their water until it becomes a muddy horrible greasy mess, when I logged on today i saw a picture with white lids over the glugs the on the front page but cannot find any info. Ideas?
The Dogmother
I gave up on glugs some time ago and just use gravity drinkers now. Much easier to keep clean.
Tiggy
gravity drinkers / what are they?
The Dogmother
Like these The water stays a lot cleaner and they are easy to clean - I just rinse them under the outside tap and bung 'em in the dishwasher.
Tiggy
OK, I'll give them a go, thanks Claret

The Dogmother
Yup, no problem at all. I give them a rough washing first though.
Alis girls
Like that Claret where did you get it? My hens wash their feet in their glug Can you dishwasher the ones that come with the Eglu does anyone know?
migsy
I'm pretty sure you can put the grub and glug into the dishwasher, but I've never done it.
DW
I always use dishwasher to clean both grubs and glugs. They come up like new! D.
JanTheDiver
I used to be able to put the glugs in my old dishwasher but not my new one, now hand washing. But I also have a gravity drinker for them to use when it is really hot i.e. more water, they get bits in the water bit but not as much as the glugs. Alis girls
Thanks I will try that.
Olly
I moved to a gravity drinker when I got my WIR - having been without the superglug for a few weeks during the move, my hens refused to go back to it, and a friend lent me an ancient galvanised gravity one - it holds much more, and keeps it cleaner although they still kick woodchip into the rim. doesn't go in the dishwasher though, I have to scrub it with hot water! Ygerna
I have gravilty feeders but, somehow I just cannot bring myself to use my dishwasher for them I have a cheap scrubbing brush which I use with running water to give mine a spruce up. sadietoo
I am interested in this thread as lately my girls have taken to using the glug as a paddling pool,...however I have two glugs which I rotate so that I can put them in the dishwasher at least once a week! Lavenders_Blue
I use a metal gravity drinker which is raised a few inches off the ground. The girls are forever clogging up the rim with woodchips and both yesterday and today I found they had pooed in it! Naughty, naughty girls - I can only assume they prefer 'flavoured' water
Gelbel
Given that the little madams love nothing more than a nice muddy puddle to drink out of I don't worry about the bit of muck in my glug or gravity drinker (they have both and 2 rabbit drinkers). I just clean them when they need filling up and on run cleaning day whether they need it or not - in the washing up bowl as I don't have a dishwasher (well, I do but his idea of washing the dishes is pretty grim )
Mercedes55
I clean mine in a bowl in the garden using water from the outside tap as the grubs and glugs get so dirty that there is no way I will put them in my kitchen sink and I don't have a dishwasher. I clean the glug out every day as I heard it's important to give them clean fresh water every day so I make sure that is really clean and empty the old water onto my plants
