I feel a campaign coming on....

Recommended Posts

Just sent them the following email

'I love the look of your new Quiche range, and looking forward to seeing you at the Hampton Court Flower Show.

Please can you tell me if you use freerange eggs in your Quiches?

I just couldn't eat anything that doesn't have eggs sourced from a free range environment.

I am sure you must, as you have high standards with all your other ingredients and I can't imagine you falling behind the other market leaders whose products include only free range eggs.'

Will let you know if I get a reply

Well done Clare on spotting it.

Never could resist a campaign

Hello

Adore your gazpacho (please excuse the spelling), cannot even consider trying any other.

Was pleased to see you are now doing quiches and in a great range of flavours. Just wondered if you can confirm that you are using free range eggs in them ? am sure you must be, and they would increase your sales if you did (think Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstall and Jaime Oliver's egg campaign).

Look forward to hearing from you

thanks

Cherryl

Yep, they are standard repsonses. I have replied again but feel I need to go out for a walk and get some air as I'm getting progressively shirty with them - not the best way to make a point I know but these companies who put profit over everything else make my blood boil.

I may be some time.

I have just received the standard reply too. I am sure you can kick them into touch Clare - but feel they maybe might just stop doing the quiches  and still use 'barn eggs' (doesn't that conjure up a pretty scene - but we all know that they don't live in 'barns' don't we)

Well, if they do stop doing the quiches, it will be a shame. I can't believe that sourcing free range eggs can be that hard.

Consumer pressure DOES work, and it would be rewarding to see them change their tack. I should imagine that their customer demographic is of the sort that would prefer to see free range eggs in their quiches.

I once helped out at a rescue where the farmer was switching from battery sheds to barns, so I went to have a look.... OK so the hens get to hop around a bit, but it's not ideal and is still overcrowded, no daylight and the smell of ammonia is still terrible.

I've had the standard reply too, but it looked like a junk email at first so I wasn't going to open it. This is my reply:

Thank you for your reply.

Obviously, I do not know the particular circumstances of the chickens who lay your eggs, but it is my opinion, as a chicken keeper, that barn hens do not have a good life. I have posted a link here for you with some information about how they are kept. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://littlehenrescue.co.uk/images/barn%2520hens%25203.jpg&imgrefurl=http://littlehenrescue.co.uk/barnhens.aspx&h=150&w=180&sz=12&tbnid=kgHgK9eESGHszM:&tbnh=84&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbarn%2Bhens&hl=en-GB&usg=__oQJdSdKCit6Kqwzm5Px4WiyPJ4Q=&sa=X&ei=C000TIqyBKf60wToscCWAw&ved=0CCAQ9QEwAg

I would be grateful if you would forward my email to whoever decides where to source your eggs.

I would also be grateful to receive any news about these quiches, i.e. whether they are discontinued or you change to free range eggs.

Interesting. There is no excuse for any food manufacturer not to use free range eggs, the higher up the marker you get the more the consumer will pay for good quality food that comes from humane sources. I was very disappointed in Covent Garden for this I thought better of them. :x
