sadietoo
Tonight we had a phone call from a foreign gentleman asking for me by my previous married name (we have never changed my name in the phone book as it always alerts us to cold calls the downside is that no-one can find our number if they need too - but we work on the basis that most people who we want to receive a call from already have our number ) Anyway he told me that he was phoning from "united clearing" regarding my bank account. I got him to repeat this twice before suggesting he was fibbing and he was still protesting his innocence as I ended the call. So anyway, if you don't have the luxury of a dodgy entry in the phone book to alert you, if a man called Albert phones about your bank account my advice is to put the phone down on him!! Charlottechicken
United clearing deal with mobile phone financial affairs, not normal bank accounts (I think). Good job you've got the dodgy listing in the phone book!
Pipichick
Ha ha, very good idea. I keep getting emails from the Tax office telling me I've overpaid and they owe me some money, all I need to give them is my bank details The Tax Office really should do spell check on their emails, the english is shocking
Willow
I have a policy of never giving any personal details to callers when they ring especially bank details. Always amazes me how many legit businesses expect you to do this as well as the dodgy ones. However if it's a legit business I expect them to be reasonable about my refusal on security grounds. Agree. If they ring me I don't know who they are!! Why should I tell them a load of personal data about me. But they just don't seem to get it... I have refused to continue a conversation more than once on this basis, and the odd thing is they seem surprised!
Krysia
I had an email today to my business email account asking for my bank details to send my refund too! HMRC want to know about phishing mails so I forwarded it to them!
bronze
I always say I'll call them back and then phone the number I had for that organisation. Any real person is happy with that
Mrs Webmuppet
Just in case any of you need the HMRC email address for the dodgy emails it's.............phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
Egluntyne
I had a lovely man called Albert, evidently a long lost relative from Burkino Faso greet me warmly by email this morning, and ask for my details so that he could pass on an unexpected inheritance from an aunt that I had never heard of. Sweet of him. All I have to do is send him a copy of my birth certificate, and tell him my height, eye and hair colour and, of course my NI number and bank details, so that his legal team can get onto the task straight away. I can hardly wait.

Old Speckled Hen
I once had a guy turn up at my surgery when I wasn't there to say he had a carpet for me in the van and could he have £200. One of my daft trainee's gave it to him out of the till She was so mortified later to discover what she had done I didn't have the heart to say much. Valkyrie
Well, did he leave you with the carpet or not? Was it flea-ridden? Gosh the cheek of some people - and they get away with it!
