What time of day do yours lay?

Recommended Posts

Ha I thought that once too.

I have 14 and they lay anywhere between about 8am and 7pm (in the summer that is). In fact today one laid an egg at 7.30pm! :)

How frequently a chocken lays is related to the breed and the amount of day light hours in a day. I think the cycles are around 25-36 hours between eggs, so 3 eggs in four days at their best. I think that most of mine lay 5 out of seven days.

I have always assumed that this is why they don't lay at the same time every day. The only two of my brood whose eggs I am are certain of are my Buff Orpingtons. They lay smaller eggs than the rest of my girls and so are most easily distinguished. They seem to lay at varying times across the day as the weeks go by.

The earliest I have seen mine go into the coop is 7.45am (they are let out at about 7am not sure if it would be earlier if I let t hem out earlier) she will then reappear about 9am I sometimes have a queue waiting to lay. As the week goes along they get later by an hour. But I have also been known to get one about 8pm.

Mine sometimes lay at odd times of the day, I think with mine it's because one of the hens is taking her time laying so it kind of delays all of them. Out of my 4 ex batts they are all laying, but not every day. The last 2 days I've had 4 eggs and all have been laid before lunchtime. However there are some days I have a quick look in the egg port late afternoon and find an egg then. I didn't realise that the breed and time of year made any difference, I have so much to learn still

Cissie is usually a first thing girl with Ada anything from first thing to early afternoon. And Madge - well, that daft girl lays whenever she feels like it and only when there is nothing interesting going on or she is sure she is not going to miss anything.

She's such a sweetheart and chats for England when I am about - if she hears me when she is on the nest she will even start her guinea-pig natter from there - as if to say "Don't do anything I can't come out just yet." She'll also lay within 20 minutes - in and out - no lounging around for her like the others.
