Facebook rant now

Recommended Posts

I love it too, & find it a fantastic way to keep in touch with family & friends.

There is an Omlet page, for those of us who use facebook, & I also run the Omlet Scrabble Tournament via Facebook, & very easy it is to do so too.

Anyone who doesn't like it or doesn't approve will find it pretty easy to avoid

Different things suit different people & parents in particular need to make sure their children are well aware of people who may try to friend them for nefarious means :?

It sounds to me like your son is a sensible lad,& I hope that his experience has not put him off what is the greatest social networking site there is 8)

as someone who actually who uses FB, i think it's great but then I don't give opinions based on hearsay ;)

I don't have an account, but I have looked at other peoples profiles, so my comment isn't based entirely on hearsay. I just don't see what all the fuss is about to be honest, I've certainly got no problem if other people enjoy using it. :D

On reflection I guess what I was trying to get across originally could have been taken the wrong way and I am sorry if anyone has taken offence to anything I've said, that certainly wasn't my intention, not that I'm saying you took offence, Poet.

This internet thing is so hard when your trying to get the balance right between participating in an honest discussion and not offending someone, my head hurts... :wall::lol:

....I don't have an account, but I have looked at other peoples profiles....

how did you manage that because you can't look at any profiles unless you have an account?

Just wondering also how you come to the conclusion that people compete to collect friends, I've certainly never come across that phenomena, unless it's what the 'kids' are up to but then again, i only have adults on my friends list

As Claret said, I think it's more of a youth thing as well... Some people (obviously not all) seem to spend most of their time on there trying to collect as many "friends" as they can. And that seems crazy to me because often these people end up spending very little time with the few real friends they have, which seems like a huge shame, but perhaps I'm just old fashioned.

Erm can people not choose to make their profiles public? If not then they must have been able to in the past because I'm sure I could just browse profiles before, it was along time ago though, before it became "cool" and the in thing to do.:lol:

I love FB too. I love being able to see what my freinds are up to, playing (and getting thrashed at) Scrabble by various Omleteers  Nowadays, people live so far apart and are so busy and they don't get to see family, friends etc as much as they'd like, so it is a good way of keeping in touch. And you get to see so many more photos than you normally would. But you do have to be careful. The people I am friends with are my family, my actual seeing in real life friends, old school friends, a few neighbours and a few Omleteers. The one up man ship on the amount of friends you have is just for the young kids really.

But back to the original post. I'd go through and check his privacy settings as you have to check lots of boxes to make sure you are hidden from everyone, unless you say otherwise. I have mine and my two kids settings as for friends only so they don't get hassle from friends of friends......of friends etc. There was a recent privacy policy change and a lot of the default settings were for everyone to see your page which I think is very naughty of FB., It should have been only friends as default and then you can change it if you want to.

When I got a snotty reply from the person, I sent this...

OK then don't ask to be friends with people whose photo you can't see is the simple answer instead of getting shirty.

Internet safety has to be the responsibility of everybody.

Then I received this...

I can ask to be friends with whomever I want. No, the simple answer is to get your child off the computer and doing physical activity with other children OUTSIDE. It is SUMMER.

If you are so concerned about internet safety then don't let a minor have a profile on site that is intended for users 18 years of age and older.

Internet safety of your child is not my responsibility, nor anyone else's, it's yours.

As far as I'm concerned the mistake is yours. Any parent I know with teenage children on this site has their child's profile hidden.

Quit blaming other people for your stupid decisions.

Now, without needing to, I explained the friend request. That should have been the end of it. Any further messages from YOU on ANY profile I will deem as HARRASSMENT and report you to facebook. So I suggest if you want to continue to use this site to babysit your child, that you stop sending me messages and spend your effort on parenting your child and not the internet!

I've blocked them and sent a report in. Nothing will happen but at least this person has been challenged.

They are very defensive, which smacks of guilt to me :?

That's what I thought.

Are you lot being serious? :?

That person could just be protesting their innocence! I think I would get all defensive if someone over reacted and wrongly accused me of something I had no intention of doing. :!:

I am a guy, so maybe I see things differently, but I am still a loving and caring father. I don't see their reply as being rude exactly, maybe they did go a little over the top and turned it into a bit of a rant, but you had implied that they were prowling by mentioning the subject of "internet safety". If we keep this in perspective they did only request to be a friend here, they didn't ask for nude pics or break any laws as far as I'm aware.

If the friend request was just ignored or declined this would probably never have even become an issue. Although I'm sure predator's are out there, not everyone is up to no good and adults are quite capable of being virtual or even real friends with minors without having amorous intentions, at least it is a lesson learned on both sides. 8):D

I would have to disagree, personally I do think their reply is very rude indeed. Ok, they haven't actually called the OP 'stupid' but they have said that their decisions are stupid, which to me, and probably to many other people, is incredibly rude indeed.

Your child has a very unusual name yes but the chances of someone having the same name in this big wide world are reasonable, after all your son was named after someone who is very well known - have you stopped to think that maybe the other person thought that as its such a distinctive name he would be unlikely to be contacting anyone else other than his old friend? - it works both ways

I'm sorry I can see why the person has become defensive, they had a valid explaination and there was no need to press the issue as far as I can see

Well this chap has got this wrong for a start. As far as I am aware, Facebook requests that you be over 13 to set up an account, not 18. I may have got that age wrong, but anyhow they certainly welcome minors to sign up and also have different privacy rules in place for them, according to the website.

It certainly seems a bit dodgy to me :?

I think fb is great when used properly :D

I don't think all big bad yoofs compete to collect more friends at all. I have family + friends in Oz and the US which we keep in contact with, but there are also different groups of people on there - friends, people from old schools and the different theatre groups ... and of course chickeny peoples ;)

Like Poet said - its so easy to invite people and advertise productions/performances on there, and it really does work.

Think its pathetic to call it (and millions of people who use it) pathetic, but hey, matter of opinion 4856337703_d337dc6bb3_o.gif

I'm also a guy but do see the reply as rude + defensive. Ok it could have easily been an innocent mistake, but just apologise and leave it at that, don't say its harrassment

Well done to him for ignoring the request + being sensible enough to talk to you about it :)

It's also great for people serving abroad. When possible it was nice for my son to keep up with the general silliness of his brothers and sister and his mates.

It helps keep them connected, especially when the phones don't always work.

Now, he's in NZ and they keep close with Facebook.

To be honest I thought it was originally aimed at youngsters and older people joined it later.

I don't know about all this 'they should be out in the fresh air stuff', I would spend hours reading on my bed in the summer when I was young or doing other indoor things. Just because we didn't have computers it doesn't follow that we were always outside.

:shock::shock::shock::shock:

How very rude of them!

Agree.

I think the reply is very cheeky IMO He/she doesn't know you or your family so who are they to judge  there is no need to be so rude and forewith with their comments! They could have just typed a simple "sorry wont bother you again message" instead of an essay! Seems someone is on their high horse! :notalk:

My younger sister has a made up name. However, if you google it, there are several pages of results and even links to pages giving the "meaning" of her name.

If the original request had said something like are you the ************* ******************** that went to whatever uni, etc, then there wouldn't have been a problem.

Son has been told about hiding profile but he changed it. He knows he's in the wrong but at least he admitted that there was a problem in his opinion. I have checked facebook and "Ooops, word censored!"ody else comes up with the same name. They may be hidden though.

Feeling like you're being accused of child abuse would make many people go slightly nuts: it's such an indescribably nasty thing that I can see how someone would lose it if they felt - rightly or wrongly - that someone was suspiscious of them. He doesn't know you and has never met you, and jsut as there are terrible stories about kids online, there are equally horrific ones about innocent people being accused of horrendous activities. So personally I wouldn't read so much into the reaction.

I think the guy could've phrased the "freind request" better, but that doens't make him an evil predator.

On balance, having spoken to your son about internet safety etc., I would be inclined to leave it now.
