littledd
Hi everyone! I have just joined Omlet as I am desperate for some help!! My 2 month old Pekin Bantam, Omlette, lhas gone missing.....She went last night and hasn't re-appeared today My 2 other Polish Chamois are fine but little Omlette has gone. No signs of feathers anywhere and we have hunted everywhere in our garden. Stupidly we didn't have a cover over our run and they have just begun escaping so I feel even more guilty that we haven't put a cover over the top or clipped their wings. Any suggestions where she could be hiding or do I admit defeat that some other pesky animal has taken her away? We are more attached to Omlette as we incubated her so we have seen her hatch and grow - any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for reading x
Blue-DiamondChick07
If it was me, I'd shake the mealworm tub, mine would always come running. I don't really know what to suggest, but I do hope you find her
chicken bark
They can get into really small places so I'd have another really good look for her. It may be that an aerial predator has taken her as she was so young and little. I hope not. Sorry.
bennett
My little dutch bantam got spooked went underneath the shed, between the wooden slats. They really can get into small places. I wasnt prepared to take the whole shed down to get her out . So i just left her to come out after 2 days she came back. If it has hidden somewhere then the weather is warm enough for them to survive outside. Apart from having a good hunt or shaking the meal worm tin all you can do it wait. Keep us posted xxxxxx
littledd
Thanks everyone for your advice. So far no luck again tonight but I might try and get other 2 to 'look' for her when I get home from work tomorrow and hope she feels safe enough to come out from hiding. I have new hope now knowing someone else's Bantam went missing for 2 days and still turned up. Keep you posted after tomorrows search hunt but any more advice and stories will help! x
beach chick
have you looked upwards?? I had one very naughty girl, and would often find her roosting up a tree or shrub...
littledd
We have got 3 little fruit trees in the garden but no noise coming from above - would she be chirping?? Would she be able to get up there when she is only 2 months old?? Sorry to sound silly - new to this - Omlette is my first chicken x
Janty
My bantams often roost out in the hedges. I know most of their hidey spaces now but they do catch me out from time to time. Good luck finding her.
Mollie333
Sorry to hear this. Hope she gets found safe and sound. Keep us posted
beach chick
hope she's turned up... definitely look upwards, because if she's roosting she'll be quiet anyway.
littledd
Well it's night 3 and still no signs of her. I have scattered some food in hope that she may come out of hiding from where ever she might be. Not giving up hope just yet. Might get the other 2 out tomorrow and see if they can chirp her out of her hidey hole. Cover will be made this weekend just hope we find her too! Mollie333
Day three.. You may find your girl, but don't have to much hope, if your in a area with foxes then.. Sorry. I hope thats not the case, and i really hope she comes out. Fingers crossed for you.
chicken bark
I agree with Mollie. Really, really hope she comes home but the longer it goes on the more likely it is she was taken. My thought is by a buzzard or something. Still keeping everything crossed for you.
Mollie333
Oh and buzzards. There a pain. Any news ?
littledd
Still not found my lovely girl I also think that the longer it goes on the more likely it is that she was taken - just don't feel ready to give up yet. I am going to have another good hunt for her this weekend. Thanks for your support and advice xx
batcatz
Hi, have you checked any neighbours gardens? She might have perched on the top of the run and flown over and down into another garden? Good luck. I am keeping my fingers crossed that you find her safe and sound. x
Mollie333
Its hard to give up, i know. I lost one of my Pekins to a fox with no traces of feathers, just a neighbour clocked a fox in a nearby field. I really hope she comes home for you. littledd
Aw thankyou! I still do hope she turns up. I have contacted local vets and RSPCA today and given her description in so I am still hoping that she has lost her way and some kind soul hands her in and realises she is a well loved family chick There weren't any signs of feathers either yet the other 2 were safe and well and not a feather out of place! I have popped into the neighbours garden to have a nosey for her (Wednesday night) but again no signs of her. Do you think I should give up hope yet?? The pen / coop doesn't look the same without her - still feel really sad about loosing her. More hunting tomorrow but can't hear her chirping so doubt she is still in our jungle garden!! As I am new to all this I really do appreciate everyone's advice and sugguestions - so please keep them coming!! xx
Mollie333
Well look at it this way, i rescued a lovely little cockerel which might have been abandoned, and i have done all i can to try and get in touch with who ever dumped him or even lost him as he is very flighty! But he is now in a good home, hopefully that's what happened to your girl. i understand she was a much loved pet. Might make you feel better to get some more as a memorial for her, but make sure it is predator proof, encase a buzzard DID get her, hopefully she will come toddling back. I know how it is too loose a hen, i've lost 6 all together now, 4 of which was from the fox. Thinking of you x
littledd
Aw Mollie that is so sad that you have lost 4. I will make sure that the whole area is safe for the other 2 this weekend and maybe look into buying more - sounds daft but I feel terrible thinking about getting more when she has only been missing a few days We have a large back garden within a busy estate - would a buzzard or something like that been able to get in do you think?? It is worse just not knowing what has happened really - doesn't feel like it is a closed book. I doubt where we live anyone would take her in but at least I have phoned the right people so if she does get handed in hopefully they will contact me and I can bring her back home. Thankyou for all your support. Dawn xx
Mollie333
Hmm.. It would be rare to be a buzzard then, i'd think!. Maybe a fox would be a better idea, then. Lost 6 all together, 4 to a fox. (3 chickens and a 27 lb turkey hen!) Sometimes its best to cheer yourself up. I wouldn't give up totally, but if you know there's foxes in the area, unless she is totally still, the fox might have got her . I live in a semi urban area and theres LOTS of foxes. The girls now can't free range at all. Edward and Deardre both went missing, suspected fox each time. How old was she? (sorry to be so straightforward) but i heard that they find somewhere dark and quiet to die. Really do hope this isn't the case, Dawn. xx
littledd
Mollie that is such a shame that they aren't safe to free-range anymore. Really sad. She was only 2 months and I know that we should have just locked them in the coop before we went out but didn't give it a thought! From what you know do you think there is much chance of her turning up now after 3 days of being missing? xx
Tricky
Perhaps she just took off on an adventure. If she was taken I would have thought some evidence would be left behind.I really hope she turns up.
