dixie chick
Lots of you have recommended the Garvo food so I went ahead and ordered some. I got the Layers Pellets and a small bag of Alfamix - which is described as a "complete food" -even containing grit. The hens ABSOLUTELY loved it!! It was not cheap though - surely it should only be fed as a treat? Anybody know??
Falkor
Hi The Alfamix is designed to be fed as a complete feed and I spose if you only have two or three hens it doesn`t cost too much however for those of us with more hens it would be very costly to do so. When I grab the occasional bag of Alfa I feed it as a treat instead of corn.
sjp
I used they alfachicks mix for a couple of weeks but to much got wasted with them sorting the best bits out that I just use it as a treat know the youngsters are on starter pellets and the big girls on scracher pellets (5030 i think)
sparkysmum
Hi Dixie, much to my regret my ladies are on Alfamix and yes you're right they love it big time However it is hugely expensive hence my regret. I know that I should just grit my teeth but they've never been enthusiastic about anyother feed and so for the time being they can continue to have their little bit of luxury. stoice
I got a large sack of 'scratch' from Garvo (5132 - if you look on link called 'product info 20kg bags' top right the page saying 'hobby poultry' on the Garvo website) and customised it with this and standard cheaper mixed corn all mixed together. Went a lot further and my girls love it.
ISCA
Mine were on Alfamix chickens and loved it but as they grew and grew, they ate more and more, and as it is much more expensive than over feeds I decided, now 5/6 are laying, they should go on to Garvo layers pellets. They eat it, so no worries there, and remain happy layers. They get corn and tomatoes as treats and they seem to enjoy their treats more now they are on layers as their staple food. Tough love. sparkysmum
Well, as you know mine have been on Garvo Alpha mix for a long bank breaking time. I just couldn't justify the cost any more & tried some Wiggly Wigglers Mash + bokashi> Guess what they're eating it . Only giving Alpha mix as a treat now. Thank goodness, thought I was stuck for life Alli xx

MummyHen
Unfortunately, Kent isn't served well by Garvo stockest. GH Grain Harvesters Country Store (google and you'll find them) just out side Canterbury are the nearest or buy online, there are others I'm sure, but I've used Newland Poultry in Malvern
Eggasperated
Still waiting for someone North of the Forth to stock Garvo .

I get mine from Jim Vyse Arks in Andover. Miles away I know but he's soooooo nice & his delivery charges are no worse that anywhere else. My OH drove to Millers in Dalkeith last time but we met them at the Royal Highland Show and they said they really wanted to get a distributor in Fife, yet my local animal feed supplier is having a real problem getting them to even talk to her and has been trying to negotiate with them for ages so she can sell Garvo. The Dogmother
I don't often buy Garvo as my local stockist isn't open at weekends, but if I get the Alfa Mix, I either feed it as a treat or cut it in with their regular pellets.
