Does anyone know about waterproof casts?

Recommended Posts

DS had an accident at the weekend whilst we were away camping - he fell 12 feet from the top of a climbing frame and fractured his arm near his wrist.

Not a massive deal I know - except we are going on holiday abroad next week for the first time in 12 years and I'm gutted for him because of the swimming pool etc.

Now the hospital who initially treated him (Gloucester Royal) have said that he has a subtle fracture and may be able to have a splint or if he needs a cast there may be the possibility of a 'waterproof' one. We are going to our local fracture clinic tomorrow morning and crossing everything that this is the case.

Does anyone know anything about waterproof casts - for instance are they available on the NHS?

If anyone could tell me a bit about them (and maybe how to twist an Orthopod's arm into letting my son have one :D ) I'd be really grateful.

Funnily enough - my own doctor put me on beta blockers for anxiety/panic attacks 3 days before this happened - blinking good job he did!

My son fractured his elbow just before we were due to go away a few years ago. We got him a waterproof cover thing from a company on the internet.

I really cant remember who we orderd off but it was on a hospital reccomendation.

If you google 'waterproof plaster cast covers' on the net you will get an idea.

He did manage to go swimming with it.

Hope you can sort out something.

Just got back from Fracture Clinic - he has a greenstick fracture at his wrist and a lovely bright Red cast on his forearm now.

The nurse was able to give me a leaflet about a waterproof cover called Limbo so I think this is the one mentioned above.

Thanks for the good wishes.

To say I need this holiday is putting it mildly!

When my DS broke his ankle last year I ordered a limbo online from their website and it was cheaper than the price on the leaflet that the fracture clinic gave me :? I then wiped out the saving by paying for next day delivery

Enjoy your holiday, limbos are really good so I'm sure that your son's cast won't be a problem, and you can relax knowing that he can enjoy the pool and keep his cast dry :D

Hi FF.....

Lauren uses cast protectors as she's often in plaster, she loves swimming as well and they always choose a holiday villa with a pool so it would be miserable for her if she didn't have cast protectors. Limbos work well but are best suited for showering - they wouldn't be any good in a swimming pool - for swimming she uses Keep-U-Dri http://www.betterlifehealthcare.com/view_product.php?prodID=5798. They are a clear which draws less attention. They are a tight fit and can become uncomfortable.

The best one she has for swimming is blue, has a pump to remove air and is ugly.....but it works the best and also keeps sand out. It doesn't have a name on it and I can't remember the make.

It's worth looking around for the best prices once you've decided.

I can ask my daughter for more info if you need to know anything?.
