Donna C
Hi all, Can anyone help me . I have two 10wk old orphingtons and want to let them roam in garden. I used to love watching my ex-batts but when i let them out they run around and flap madly. I then panic and put them back in run, then am really mad with myself . I know they're not s'pose to be able to fly but i am so worried they'll get over 6ft fence( i know how mad that sounds) got lost as i have to go round block of houses to get to other side of fence, or ran over or neighbours will go mad. Does anyone have any tips to help me chill out abit or these poor girls will never get a nice roam in the garden. Donna
sjp
I've got 3 10 week olds 1 naked neck and 2 marans they only get about a foot off the ground when flying, they're out now with the big girls let them out for an hour while you sit out in the evening sun with a cuppa or something stronger and some chicken type treats they wont go far above all enjoy them running about trashing the garden

Plum
I feel like that with my little ones and I've had the others several years now. Mine have a mad five minutes when they go in the big run and shoot upwards and sidewards and chase eachother it's like watching the mad kittens. If I was you I would net off a bit first so they could let of steam there and just jump into the garden rather than out of it. Then let them out in the rest of the garden when they have calmed down. Would that work Yesterday mine started coming out in the garden and I was worried they would go daft but they were quite cautious and a bit more bold today and went back by themselves ok when rotten Grackle chased them. chicken bark
The bigger they are the less they will be able to fly. As I've got other hens I can't let my 10 week olds out of their run. Mine won't be let out until they are about 16/18 weeks - by then I hope they will be too interested in the other hens and too big to fly off.
