Chicken Licken
Just thought I'd share. My first earlies have all poked through and the first of my Charlotte's too. Also the Jerusalem Artichokes! Sadly the Swiss chard and perpetual spinach were planted far too early outside and have done nothing and my carrots and parsnips desperately need rain I do love my allotment and so do my chickens too!! Guest
We searched for Jerusalem Artichokes this year, but couldn't find any - I wanted a bed of them along the back fence. Where did you get them from, Chicken Licken?
hillfamily
I have forgotten to plant my spuds Been a bit hectic here...............is it too late for me to put them in later this week They're very well chitted
Lesley
Mine have only just gone in Pam........ and I still have some Maincrop to plant. If they have started to sprout long, thin, pale shoots instead of stubby dark green ones, just rub them off. They'll be fine.

Chicken Licken
I have to admit the jerusalem artichokes came out of my veg - box - I had forgotten they were there and they were rooting merrily! So I planted them - figured they were pretty bomb proof and they seem to be doing okay. My mum ordered proper ones from one of the seed companies and her ones are doing well! I haven't seen any in a garden centre though
Martin B
I have planted 3 of mine in a tub. The others are going somewhere special next week!

Cinnamon
Can I ask a spuddy question, having never grown them before? It says to cover the shoots with soil. Does that mean you sort of pile earth around the plant,so as only the leaves are showing? I am assuming thats what it means, but am not sure & am also hindered by this darn Blackbird who keeps coming & digging the earth away from the plant again
The Dogmother
Yup, each time the shoots surface, you need to pile more earth on top until they are buried again. I grow mine in sacks, and I unroll the sack until the top, then stop piling earth in, let them grow, flower and die down before I harvest. A friend at work has them and they grow and multiply like mad - she has tried to dig them out for the past 2 years but they keep coming up! Egluntyne
The word I had in mind does begin with a "p"...but it isn't "philistine". Any road as they say round here.....I can't keep up with my spuds.....I'm having to earth them up every day! I'm dying to have a peep under the compost to see what's going on. The Dogmother
Mine too, they're nearly out of the sacks! I'm going to firm the compost down around them and see if I can get some more in.
