Egluntyne
Planted loads of spuds, maincrop and early a couple of weeks ago. Up till yesterday, nothing doing but had a look this aft and several of them have started to produce leaves! Am pleased as I've never grown spuds before. Watch this space! Snowy
Excellent Egluntine! So have mine - I was told to plant the earlies first, so did that at beginning of April, they are producing leaves now. Planted the others a couple of days ago. Question: how tall should they be when you start building up the compost around them? (Mine are in 'bags'). Egluntyne
Mine are in bags too. I have read that you should start earthing them up when the foliage gets to about 4-6"high. Have a look here here Edited April 21, 2007 by Guest

Cinnamon
Mine all showed their faces this week too, & we have never grown them before either. Exciting this gardening lark, isn't it?
ali-s
My 6 pots of "Charlottes" were earthed up on Wednesday I have still got a few of them chitting in the spare bedroom which I need to find pots for this weekend.
Cinnamon
Charlottes are my favourite salad pot, but I left it far too late this year & everywhere was sold out We got maris Bard (I think) instead, & I have Desirees on the go too
Lesley
Ours only went in yesterday - earlier than last year as we moved in on May 1st and then made temporary beds to put them in - they all caught up in the end. Earth up the potatoes at any size if there is a possibility of frost overnight. I think it is supposed to become colder next week - we are supposed to have 'persistent rain' here on Monday
Egluntyne
Ooh thanks for the tip Lesley.
Martin B
'persistent rain' here on Monday Please say you're joking! I've just planted out loads more seeds into pots, without a greenhouse!

Martin B
I'm still to plant mine! What shall I plant now? Maincrop? Martin
Lesley
Plant any type Martin - they'll all grow. If you want them quickly, choose one of the earlies - either first or second - and plant them closer together than you would for the maincrops. Are you planting them in pots/tubs/bags? Martin B
I'm not sure Lesley! That's my next Dilemma!
Lesley
.......then buy a couple of bags of decent compost - roll the tops down and take half the compost out and keep in another bag ready for covering the shoots, make a few holes about 15cm from the ground, around the bag. Push 5 potatoes into each sack. Keep them watered and cover the shoots when they are a few inches high, with the saved compost, until the bags are almost full. you should get a good crop. Martin B
Thanks for the concern everybody. Because I have mock exams this fortnight during lesson we are not doing much so it's a bit of a doss! We was in a computer room for a lesson so there was only one answer! I have a bit of a problem though. The hardware store has ran out of potatoes. Any suggestions? ali-s
Martin I have 13 Charlotte seed potatoes already chitted spare as I ran out of pots. You are very welcome to have them. If I wrap them carefully in bubblewrap and put them in a box I am sure they will survive the journey. PM me if you would like them.
